Behind the Scenes with Ali Wong and Echo Wu: Jentry Chau vs. the Underworld – Interview

Netflix’s Jentry Chau vs. the Underworld set to premiere December 5th.

Netflix’s highly anticipated animated series Jentry Chau vs. the Underworld is set to debut on December 5, 2024. Created by Echo Wu, the show features a star-studded voice cast, including Ali Wong, Lucy Liu, Woo Sung Kim, Sheng Wang, Bowen Yang, Jimmy O. Yang, and Lori Tan Chinn. The series promises a thrilling mix of supernatural action and heartfelt storytelling.

The series centers on Jentry Chau (voiced by Ali Wong), a Chinese-American teen navigating life in a quiet Texas town. Her world turns upside down when she discovers she’s the target of a demon king determined to claim the supernatural powers she’s been suppressing. With the help of her weapons-savvy great-aunt and a jiangshi (a Chinese hopping vampire), Jentry must take on terrifying monsters from the underworld while juggling high school’s everyday chaos.

A Love Letter to Texas and Culture

For Wu, the setting of Texas is deeply personal. “I was born and raised in Texas,” Wu shared. “The series is a love letter to my childhood in Carrollton. From quirky traditions like mums at homecoming to saying the Texas pledge, it’s a unique slice of life I wanted to bring to the screen.” Wong echoed this sentiment, praising the authentic cultural details embedded in the story.

Bringing the World to Life

Wong highlighted the joys of voice acting, describing it as a liberating creative process. “I love seeing the characters come to life through animation,” Wong said. “It’s thrilling to work with a team that brings such a clear vision of this fantastical world.” She also praised the comedic synergy of the cast, particularly with talents like Bowen Yang and Lori Tan Chinn.

Wu and Wong also discussed the show’s blend of humor and heart, noting standout moments like Wong’s karaoke performance of Blackpink’s “Pretty Savage” in the pilot. “We made a homemade karaoke lyric video for Ali to follow along. She nailed it,” Wu recalled with a laugh.

Monsters, Weapons, and Memorable Moments

The series is packed with inventive supernatural elements. During the interview, Wong joked about fighting monsters from Jentry’s world, admitting she’d use Goo Boo’s magical rings, while Wu preferred the comedic idea of battling lion statues with a mop.

With its engaging narrative, a vibrant cast, and a mix of thrilling battles and laugh-out-loud moments, Jentry Chau vs. the Underworld promises to be an exciting addition to Netflix’s lineup. Fans can look forward to diving into the series on December 5.
