How Axel Foley changed action-comedy forever.

Released on Dec. 5, 1984, Beverly Hills Cop transformed Eddie Murphy into a global superstar and cemented its place as a quintessential action-comedy. Martin Brest directed the film. It follows Detroit detective Axel Foley, played by Murphy. He travels to the glitzy and wildly contrasting world of Beverly Hills. There, he investigates his friend’s murder. The film’s unique blend of comedy, action, and heart created a legacy that has lasted four decades.
From its sharp one-liners to its thrilling set pieces, Beverly Hills Cop delivered some of the most memorable moments in film history. Murphy’s natural charisma and comedic timing shone in every scene, particularly in the iconic “supercops” monologue, where Axel hilariously convinces the Beverly Hills police force to go along with his unorthodox methods. Lines like “Get the **** outta here!” and the banana-in-the-tailpipe gag became cultural staples, showcasing the perfect balance of humor and action.
The film had a talented supporting cast.
It included Judge Reinhold and the late John Ashton as Beverly Hills detectives Billy Rosewood and John Taggart, whose odd-couple dynamic added another layer of humor to the story. Lisa Eilbacher played Axel’s friend Jenny Summers, while Steven Berkoff portrayed the menacing villain Victor Maitland.

Audiences and critics alike lauded Beverly Hills Cop. The movie earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Writing (Original Screenplay), and two Golden Globe nods Best Motion Picture – Comedy/Musical and Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical for Eddie Murphy. It also dominated the box office, becoming the highest-grossing film of 1984 in the U.S. and raking in over $316 million worldwide.
The soundtrack was another standout aspect of the film.
Harold Faltermeyer’s “Axel F” theme became an instant classic, and the album won a Grammy Award. Its infectious beats perfectly complemented the movie’s high-energy vibe, cementing its place in 1980s pop culture.

The success of Beverly Hills Cop led to two sequels. Beverly Hills Cop II (1987), directed by Tony Scott, brought back Axel for another action-packed adventure and achieved similar box office success. Beverly Hills Cop III (1994), while not as critically acclaimed, continued the franchise’s legacy. This year fans finally got a fourth installment that brought together our favorite characters.
