Alicia Silverstone is reportedly returning as Cher Horowitz in a new Clueless sequel series at Peacock.

The teen comedy Clueless, written and directed by Amy Heckerling, was released 30 years ago this week. The 1995 film became a pop culture phenomenon. It blended sharp comedy with timeless charm and introduced a new generation to the story of Jane Austen’s Emma.
Set in Beverly Hills, Clueless follows high schooler Cher Horowitz, played by Alicia Silverstone, as she navigates popularity, matchmaking, and self-discovery. The film centers on Cher’s attempt to transform a new, awkward student named Tai, played by Brittany Murphy, into a social success. Along the way, Cher learns that confidence, kindness, and self-awareness matter more than makeovers.
Box office success and cultural legacy
The film premiered in theaters on July 19, 1995. It was made on a $12 million budget and grossed over $56 million at the domestic box office. It has since become one of the most quoted and referenced films of the 1990s.
Clueless featured a breakout cast. It included Silverstone, Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, Donald Faison, Brittany Murphy, Breckin Meyer, and Elisa Donovan. The film launched several careers and led to multiple adaptations, including a spin-off television series that ran from 1996 to 1999, a collection of YA novels, a stage production, and various merchandise tie-ins.
Where the cast is now
Silverstone became a pop culture icon through her role and later starred in several feature films, including Batman & Robin, Blast from the Past, and Beauty Shop. In recent years, she appeared in Senior Year, The Requin, and Netflix’s Reptile. She is reportedly attached to reprise the character of Cher Horowitz in a new sequel series in development at Peacock. Details about the project have not been publicly confirmed, but reports indicate it will revisit Cher in a modern-day setting.

Paul Rudd, who played Cher’s ex-stepbrother and love interest Josh, has since become one of Hollywood’s most successful leading men. In addition to his ongoing role as Ant-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he has starred in This Is 40 and Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
Brittany Murphy’s role as Tai remains one of her most beloved performances. She also starred in 8 Mile, Just Married, Girl, Interrupted, and Uptown Girls. Murphy also voiced Luanne Platter in the long-running animated series King of the Hill. Murphy died in 2009 at age 32.

Stacey Dash, who played Cher’s best friend Dionne, reprised the role in the Clueless TV series and went on to appear in View from the Top and Renaissance Man.
Donald Faison, who played Dionne’s boyfriend Murray, found continued success with his role as Dr. Turk on Scrubs, which ran for nine seasons. He also appeared in Remember the Titans and Kick-Ass 2. Faison has voiced characters in Robot Chicken and Star Wars Resistance. He currently co-hosts the podcast Fake Doctors, Real Friends with Scrubs co-star Zach Braff.

Breckin Meyer, who played skater Travis Birkenstock, appeared in Road Trip, Rat Race, Garfield, Franklin & Bash, and Inside Job. Elisa Donovan, who played Cher’s rival Amber, also reprised her role for the TV series and later starred in Sabrina the Teenage Witch and multiple holiday television movies.
Quotes and lasting influence
Among the film’s lasting impact are its memorable quotes, including “As if!,” “You’re a virgin who can’t drive,” and “I totally paused.” Its dialogue, wardrobe, and soundtrack have become hallmarks of 1990s teen cinema.

Clueless was produced by Scott Rudin and released by Paramount Pictures. It continues to be rediscovered by new audiences through streaming platforms and has been credited with influencing fashion, language, and the structure of teen comedies for decades.
Sequel series in development
The 30th anniversary of Clueless arrives amid renewed interest in reviving ’90s film properties for television and streaming. A premiere date for the sequel series has not been announced yet.
