‘Despicable Me 4’ Is A Gru-tastic Giggle-fest! – Movie Review

Despicable Me 4 will be in theaters on July 3rd.

In the first “Despicable Me” movie in seven years, Gru, the world’s favorite supervillain-turned-Anti-Villain League agent, returns for an exciting, bold new era of Minions mayhem in Illumination’s “Despicable Me 4.” Following the 2022 summer blockbuster phenomenon of Illumination’s “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” which earned almost $1 billion worldwide, the biggest global animated franchise in history now begins a new chapter as Gru, Lucy (Kristen Wiig), and their girls—Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier), and Agnes (Madison Polan), welcome a new member to the Gru family, Gru Jr., who is intent on tormenting his dad.

The film is a heartwarming and hilarious adventure that is perfect for the whole family.

Gru’s family dynamics and the lovable antics of the Minions never fail to entertain. While the Minions are mostly in the background and in cutaway scenes, they are as hilarious as ever. But a few of them take center stage with newfound powers thanks to a Super Serum like Captain America and become Might Minions! Their antics had me snorting and laughing out loud throughout the entire movie.

Gru and his family, voiced by the talented cast of Steve Carrell, Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier, Madison Skyy Polan, and Kristen Wiig, continue to be amazing and delightful. Carrell’s performance as Gru is iconic, and in this installment, Will Ferrell delivers a voice performance that matches Carrell’s in quality and humor. Ferrell voices the new nemesis, Maxime Le Mal, and his performance is highly impressive.

A standout addition to the cast is A Family Affair’s Joey King. She voices Poppy, a villain in the making with braces. King’s performance is amazing; her character adds a fresh dynamic to the story. The new and old cast members all deliver great performances, making the film a joy to watch.

The story takes us to new and visually delightful places. It showcases the creative world-building that has become a hallmark of the franchise. Gru faces a new nemesis in Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell) and his femme fatale girlfriend Valentina (Sofia Vergara), forcing the family to go on the run. The plot is engaging and full of callbacks and Easter eggs, especially scenes that pay homage to iconic movies like “Spider-Man 2,” “Terminator 2,” and even a big plot point reminiscent of “Wild Wild West.” These nods to other films add more enjoyment for the adult audience.

Verdict

I give “Despicable Me 4” 4 out of 5 stars. It is packed with nonstop action and Illumination’s signature subversive humor. I am already anticipating more Minions fun with another installment.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
