Why Dog Man is the perfect family movie you can’t miss.

DreamWorks Animation has done it again, delivering a vibrant, hilarious, and heartfelt adaptation of Dav Pilkey’s beloved Dog Man series. Packed with nonstop laughs, colorful animation, and an endearing story, Dog Man is a family film with kids hooked and adults chuckling.
At its core, Dog Man is an action-packed comedy with much heart. The film follows the origin of its titular, a half-dog, half-man crimefighter who comes to life through a bizarre yet life-saving surgery that fuses a police officer and his loyal K-9 partner. Now part dog, part man, and all hero, Dog Man is sworn to protect and serve, even if that means the occasional game of fetch.
Voiced with charm and energy, the stellar cast elevates Dog Man.
Lil Rel Howery (Get Out, Free Guy) shines as the ever-exasperated Chief. At the same time, Pete Davidson (Saturday Night Live, The King of Staten Island) steals scenes as Petey the Cat, the film’s mischievous yet oddly endearing feline villain.

The plot turns unexpectedly when Petey clones himself. This creates Lil Petey, a tiny kitten with a big heart. Lil Petey challenges his creator’s villainous ways. When Lil Petey is kidnapped, Dog Man and Petey form an unlikely alliance to save him. This leads to an action-packed adventure filled with humor. Surprisingly, there is also a touching message about family and redemption.

The animation is a feast for the eyes.
It perfectly captures the vibrant, exaggerated style of Pilkey’s books. DreamWorks successfully translates the visual tone of the book series onto the big screen, making every frame pop with energy. The expressive character designs, dynamic action sequences, and playful color palette create an immersive world that feels fresh and familiar to fans of the books.

Beyond its visual appeal, this film balances humor with plenty of heart. The jokes land consistently, with slapstick gags and witty dialogue keeping the audience entertained. Yet, beneath the humor lies a story about connection, second chances, and the importance of doing what’s right even when it’s not easy.
With a strong supporting cast, including Isla Fisher, Ricky Gervais, and Stephen Root, and direction by Emmy-winner Peter Hastings, Dog Man is more than just a fun kids movie. It is a crowd-pleaser that the whole family will enjoy.
Verdict
I give Dog Man 5 out of 5 stars. Whether you are a longtime fan of the Dog Man books or discovering the character for the first time, this film delivers an engaging adventure. It’s a laugh-out-loud story filled with warmth, action, and just the right amount of puppy charm. It is a must-watch for families looking for an uplifting and wildly entertaining cinematic experience. Catch it in theaters starting January 31st.
