Dr. Peter Weller’s next chapter with Weller World.

For many, Dr. Peter Weller is forever etched in pop culture as the face of RoboCop and the offbeat hero of The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. But behind the visor and cult-classic legacy, Dr. Weller has spent decades immersed in academia, the arts, and teaching — passions now distilled into his latest project: a YouTube channel called Weller World.
A Spark for History
Surprisingly, Dr. Weller admitted his fascination with art and history didn’t come naturally. “I had no interest in it,” he explained. “My dad was big into history, my cousins were summa cum laudes, and I felt like the caboose of the train. I was intimidated. I wasn’t a reader. But one book of my father’s grabbed me — Robert Graves on the Greek gods. That pulled me in.”
That spark grew over time, helped by influential figures. “Ali MacGraw, the actress, rubbed my nose in Picasso,” Dr. Weller recalled. “Once you get interested in art, you’ve got to read. You can’t just say, ‘I like that painting.’ You’ve got to know where it comes from — abstract expressionism, Cézanne, all of it. You start realizing, art doesn’t happen in a vacuum. You’ve got to look at what came before.”
Traveling and teaching further shaped his view. “If a kid can turn on TikTok and find out where the sewage system is in Pompeii, that’s not a bad thing,” he said with a laugh. “I didn’t have that. I had to learn it the hard way. Maybe I’d be Einstein by now if I did.”
Teaching as Storytelling
When Dr. Weller returned to school for his master’s degree, he discovered how much storytelling matters in education. “Syracuse had this amazing program abroad, but it was work, work, work,” he said. “You’re taking 50 kids to Mantua to teach Giulio Romano’s Palazzo Te and Alberti’s San Andrea. That’s when I realized the best professors don’t just give facts — they entertain. They hook you. That’s what I want Weller World to do: turn people on.”
He compared it to the Renaissance sculptor Donatello, who broke convention by portraying people as they were. “He took formalism and turned it into naturalism — people slouching, crying, squinting. The people loved it because it looked like their uncle, their father. And suddenly, the establishment had to back off and say, ‘Okay, bring Donatello back.’ That’s what great teaching does — it grabs you and makes you care.”
Building Weller World
The YouTube channel itself was born out of Dr. Weller’s book Leon Battista Alberti in Exile, published by Cambridge University Press. “If you publish something, you must shamelessly promote it,” he joked, showing off the volume. “But I didn’t know how to promote. I’m not a social media guy. My wife Shari had called it Weller World for 30 years, and suddenly it made sense. So here we are.”
Unlike traditional travel shows, Weller World is built for speed. “It’s not Rick Steves, and it’s not a 20-minute lecture. It’s fast hits,” Dr. Weller said. “See this church? Here’s who built it. See this ruin? Here’s why it matters. You want to know where to eat paella? I’ll tell you. It’s quick, it’s enthusiastic, and it’s about sparking curiosity.”
Culture and Compassion
For Dr. Weller, the mission goes beyond history. “The best thing we can do is get people off their butts to go somewhere,” he said. “Go to Toledo, where a mosque, a synagogue, and a cathedral stand next to each other. Learn cultural realism. If you understand people, you stop judging them. Every faith says the same thing: handle what’s in front of you with kindness.”
He added, “Rome tried to stop migration. Egypt tried to stop it. You can’t. People move. They’re going to go where they can live better. So don’t lock people out. Regulate, but also embrace. That’s the only way forward.”
Coffee, Cigars, and Travel Memories
The conversation also revealed Dr. Weller’s passion for life’s smaller joys. “You’ve got to get the right beans,” he said of coffee. “Arabic beans, low-roast, organic by law in Italy. Forget the bitter stuff. If you’ve ever had a cappuccino in a Milan train station, you know — it’s magic. They knock it out in seconds, and it’s the best you’ll ever taste.”
He’s just as vivid when talking about cigars. “There’s nothing like sitting in Piazza San Marco in Venice with a cigar,” he said. “Or in Assisi, watching the sun set over the Umbrian Valley. Those moments are priceless.”
As for food, he didn’t hesitate: “The best meal? White truffles from Alba. Tagliolini with butter, risotto, or eggs. That’s it. Nothing better in the world,” he said. “They only come from Alba, and when you have them, you understand. That’s it. That’s the meal.”
Lessons and Advice
Asked what wisdom he would share, Dr. Weller leaned forward. “Stay in school. Don’t stop — once you do, it’s hard to start again,” he said. “Get out among people. Don’t sit in a room judging the world. Find out what you really want to do and do it. That’s the law of prosperity. And no plan B. If you want to sell terracotta plates to support your dream, fine. But no plan B.”
He added, “Life isn’t about the stuff. It’s about the people who love you, the touch from someone who cares. That’s what matters.”
The Future of Weller World
As Weller World grows, Dr. Weller hopes it will inspire others as much as history has inspired him. “I want it to galvanize people, like Edward Watts’ book on the fall of the Roman Republic made me want to go to Rome,” he said. “If I can get someone to embrace another culture and say, ‘Wow, I didn’t know this,’ then I’ve done my job.”
For fans who grew up with RoboCop and Buckaroo Banzai, Weller World offers something different but equally authentic — the voice of an artist, teacher, and explorer still driven by curiosity. “The best a human being can be,” Dr. Weller concluded, “is kind. If Weller World can bring even a little of that, I’m good.”
