Drew Van Acker and Andrew McCarthy Reflect on Filming Orion – INTERVIEW

The actors discuss what they learned from working together on Orion, their process for reading a script, and more.

Drew Van Acker and Andrew McCarthy star as Apollo and Jim in Orion, which had its World Premiere at FilmQuest and will next be shown today at Trieste in Italy. The sci-fi thriller follows a Nasa Interrogator who is given the job of helping an amnesiac astronaut recover his memory after a crash landing to find out what happened to the rest of the crew.

On Embodying His Character’s Mindset

“For me, as the performer, as the actor, I have certain things, I guess, that I like to do to kind of ground me, hone me in, and zero me in, whether it’s months before, weeks before, or on the day. One of those is audio cues, so I have headphones in a lot,” Van Acker, who is also a producer, shared. “There were a lot of layers to the character, playing certain lies that he knew were to be truths, that he was lying to himself, and so it got a little crazy in my head at times.”

“I journal as the character, so I listened to that through voice recording, and it kind of helps me remember where I’m at, and not to get too far ahead in the story, and just remember in this group of scenes, or in this scene, here’s where you’re at. It’s just constantly kind of playing in my mind.”

On The Value of Filming In Continuity

“In all the years, I’ve never shot chronologically before. But I mean, this is one set, so why not? It was really helpful,” McCarthy told me. “There’s so many different times when you’re lying, or you’re pretending this one thing, you know, I’m pretending that I have kids and then, the next time I’m mentioning that kid, it turns out, oh, I’m going to tell him I didn’t have a kid, and then I’m going to pretend that the world outside is getting blown up. It’s just helpful to me. You don’t have to be flipping back in the script or listening to things on headphones, telling you where you are in the story. You’re just in the story.”
