On Monday, March 14, 2022, Stephen Wilhite passed away at the age of 74. He was known as the inventor of the GIF, Graphics Interchange Format. The first GIF was launched in 1987. Wilhite retired as Chief Architect from America Online and received the Webby Lifetime Achievement Award in New York. His cause of date was due to complications after contracting COVID. Wilhite settles the debate about how to pronounce GIF in the video below. Read his obituary.
