First look at Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

The wizarding world returns to the screen as HBO’s highly anticipated television adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s beloved books begins its journey with the release of its first official teaser trailer and confirmation of a Christmas 2026 premiere. The first season will be titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and will consist of eight episodes, marking the start of a long-form retelling of the iconic fantasy series.
The teaser was unveiled at the HBO Max UK & Ireland launch event ahead of the platform’s official rollout. The series will debut on HBO in the United States and stream exclusively on HBO Max in regions where the service is available, including newly launched markets Germany, Italy, the UK, and Ireland.
A Faithful New Beginning for Harry Potter
The new series promises a deeper and more faithful adaptation of the original novels, allowing more time to explore the characters, world-building, and magical mythology that made the books a global phenomenon.
According to the official logline, the story begins with a boy who believes there is nothing special about him:
Harry Potter has grown up under the strict watch of his Aunt Petunia, who insists that he is perfectly ordinary. However, everything changes on his eleventh birthday when a mysterious letter invites him to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There, Harry discovers a hidden world filled with friendship, adventure, and magic. But the excitement of this new life comes with danger, as Harry is forced to confront a powerful enemy tied to his past.
New Cast Brings the Wizarding World to Life
The series introduces a new generation of actors portraying the beloved characters from the first novel.
Dominic McLaughlin stars as Harry Potter, joined by Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The trio will lead the story as young students navigating their first year at Hogwarts.

Veteran actors round out the cast. It includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape. Nick Frost takes on the role of fan-favorite groundskeeper Rubeus Hagrid.

A New Era for a Legendary Franchise
Based on J.K. Rowling’s internationally bestselling book series, the HBO adaptation aims to deliver a comprehensive retelling of the Harry Potter story across multiple seasons. Each season is expected to focus on one novel, allowing the series to dive deeper into the source material than previous adaptations.
The announcement of a Christmas 2026 release positions the series as a major holiday event, aligning with the nostalgic seasonal tradition long associated with the Harry Potter films.
With an expansive cast and the promise of a faithful adaptation, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated television premieres of 2026.
