HBO sets the premiere window for its new campus comedy, Rooster.

HBO will debut the new original comedy series Rooster in March 2026. The 10-episode season will air on HBO and stream on HBO Max. The series comes from Warner Bros. Television and pairs co-showrunners and executive producers Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses. Steve Carell leads the cast and also serves as an executive producer.
The series marks Carell’s latest return to television comedy after recent dramatic turns in The Morning Show and The Patient. Lawrence continues to expand his comedy footprint at HBO following hits across broadcast and streaming. Tarses, known for Scrubs and Sports Night, joins him to craft a character-driven story set in the world of higher education.
Story Focuses on a Complicated Family Dynamic
Rooster centers on an accomplished author who teaches on a college campus. His daughter, played by Charly Clive, becomes part of his daily life in ways he did not expect. Their strained relationship forms the core of the story. The series explores how personal history disrupts familiar spaces and how parent-child tension follows people into adulthood.

HBO describes the show as a comedy that blends sharp wit with emotional honesty. The campus setting gives the series a backdrop for academic rivalries, creative conflicts, and a constant push toward reinvention.
Ensemble Cast Brings Depth to the New Series
Carell and Clive lead an ensemble that includes Danielle Deadwyler, Phil Dunster, John C. McGinley, and Lauren Tsai. Each actor plays a key figure within the campus environment. Their characters connect to the author’s professional world and his personal life.

Deadwyler’s recent acclaimed work positions her as a standout in the group. Dunster, fresh from Ted Lasso, adds another comedic turn to his growing résumé. McGinley brings decades of experience in both comedy and drama. Tsai continues her rise with a role that further expands her range.
HBO expects Rooster to anchor a strong spring lineup in 2026 as the network continues to invest in character-based comedies with experienced creative teams.
