John Wick Turns 10: How the Action Classic Changed the Game

Celebrating 10 years of ‘John Wick,’ the action thriller that redefined revenge cinema.

John Wick (2014) blasted onto the big screen a decade ago. It redefined action movies with intense stunts, stylish visuals, and a simple yet compelling plot. Chad Stahelski directed the movie. He was previously Keanu Reeves’ stunt double in The Matrix trilogy. John Wick introduced audiences to a world of sleek, noirish underground crime. In this world, honor and codes governed hitmen and assassins.

The story follows John Wick, a retired hitman. He is drawn back into the violent underworld after a group of thugs steal his car. Most unforgivably, they kill his beloved dog, Daisy — a final gift from his late wife. This singular act sets off a relentless quest for vengeance, turning the quiet, grief-stricken Wick into a one-man army.

Keanu Reeves: The Face of Vengeance

Keanu Reeves, known for his role in The Matrix, took on the role of John Wick with ferocity. He masters “gun-fu,” a blend of firearms and martial arts that gave the film its distinct style. To prepare, Reeves underwent extensive training. His training included judo, jiu-jitsu, and tactical weapons training. He pushed his physical limits to embody the role of a man unstoppable in his quest for justice.

The film’s success was no accident. It was built on meticulously choreographed action scenes, each one more thrilling than the last. The film featured Wick’s brutal shootout in the Red Circle nightclub. He also had a confrontation with Viggo Tarasov. These scenes delivered memorable moments that have since become iconic. This fresh approach to combat, blending seamless martial arts with tactical gunplay, set John Wick apart from traditional action films.

The cast played a crucial role in bringing the film’s gritty world to life.

Keanu Reeves, in the titular role, delivered a nuanced performance that balanced grief, fury, and a stoic determination to seek justice. His portrayal resonated deeply with audiences, turning John Wick into an iconic character in modern cinema. A stellar cast supported him. Michael Nyqvist played the menacing Viggo Tarasov. Viggo is the crime lord who unwittingly sets Wick on his path of revenge. Alfie Allen portrayed Iosef Tarasov. Iosef is the reckless son who ignites Wick’s fury. Willem Dafoe took on the role of Marcus, Wick’s former ally.

The film also featured strong performances from Ian McShane as Winston, the enigmatic owner of the Continental Hotel, and Lance Reddick as Charon, the hotel’s enigmatic concierge. This talented ensemble elevated the film’s emotional stakes. They added depth to its vibrant underworld. This created a rich tapestry of characters that have become beloved by fans.

However, bringing John Wick to life was challenging. Just days before filming was set to begin, a sudden gap in the film’s funding almost led to its cancellation. In a surprising twist, actress and producer Eva Longoria stepped in. She invested $6 million less than 24 hours before the cameras rolled. Longoria later reflected on her decision. She called it “the best money” she’d ever spent. The film would go on to become a worldwide phenomenon.

A Hit at the Box Office

John Wick debuted on October 24, 2014. It became an unexpected box office hit. The film grossed over $86 million worldwide on a modest $20 million budget. Its raw, fast-paced action and the mysterious world of assassins that Stahelski and screenwriter Derek Kolstad had crafted captivated audiences. The film received praise for its gritty yet stylish aesthetic, creating a neo-noir environment that felt both familiar and new.

The film’s success spawned an expansive franchise. Sequels John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017), John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019), and John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023) continued to expand on the universe. Each sequel delved deeper into the hidden society of assassins. Reeves reprised his role as the stoic and lethal anti-hero. With each installment, the franchise increased the stakes. It introduced new characters and elaborate fight scenes. It also developed a rich mythology exploring its underworld’s rules and hierarchy.

But the John Wick universe isn’t stopping there. Fans can expect a spin-off titled Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas. The film is set to explore the world from a different perspective. There are plans for an anime prequel series. The Continental explores the history of the iconic hotel, which serves as a safe haven for assassins.

Chad Stahelski: From Stunt Double to Director

A key figure behind the success of John Wick is Chad Stahelski. His experience as Keanu Reeves’ stunt double during The Matrix films gave him a unique perspective on action choreography. This allowed him to create some of the most dynamic fight sequences seen on screen. His directorial debut with John Wick marked the start of a new era of stylized action films. The franchise is credited for bringing back the demand for practical stunts over CGI-heavy effects.

Ten years later, John Wick remains a testament to a simple story paired with sharp direction. A dedicated lead actor and a bit of resilience can lead to something extraordinary.
