Jurassic World Turns 10: Revisiting the Blockbuster That Brought Dinosaurs Back to Life Again

A decade ago, Jurassic World reignited the almost extinct franchise.

On this day, 10 years ago, Jurassic World stormed into theaters on June 12, 2015, reigniting the beloved Jurassic Park franchise for a whole new generation. Directed by Colin Trevorrow, the film was both a nostalgic throwback and a bold new chapter, proving that audiences were still eager to witness dinosaurs rule the Earth once more.

Serving as a soft reboot and direct continuation of Steven Spielberg’s original Jurassic Park trilogy, Jurassic World introduced a fully functional dinosaur theme park, finally fulfilling John Hammond’s original vision. But of course, as history (and movie logic) would dictate, things quickly spiraled out of control.

The Plot: When Science Goes Too Far

The film’s central conflict revolves around creating a genetically engineered hybrid dinosaur: the Indominus rex. Designed by Dr. Henry Wu (BD Wong reprising his role from the original film), this apex predator was intended to boost park attendance. Instead, the Indominus escapes its paddock, leading to a deadly chain reaction of chaos and destruction across Isla Nublar.

Park operations manager Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) teams up with raptor trainer Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) to track down the escaped creature and rescue her nephews, Zach (Nick Robinson) and Gray (Ty Simpkins), who are trapped in the park as the carnage unfolds.

The Cast: A Fresh and Familiar Lineup

  • Chris Pratt as Owen Grady
  • Bryce Dallas Howard as Claire Dearing
  • Vincent D’Onofrio as Vic Hoskins
  • Ty Simpkins as Gray Mitchell
  • Nick Robinson as Zach Mitchell
  • BD Wong as Dr. Henry Wu
  • Irrfan Khan as Simon Masrani
  • Jake Johnson and Lauren Lapkus as park staff members, Lowery and Vivian

Trevorrow brought together a cast that blended humor, heart, and action while paying tribute to the franchise’s legacy.

The Dinosaurs: New Threats, Familiar Faces

Jurassic World showcased both returning fan favorites and brand-new dinosaur threats:

  • Indominus rex — the film’s terrifying hybrid villain
  • Velociraptors — including Blue, Delta, Echo, and Charlie, trained by Owen
  • Tyrannosaurus rex — the original queen of the island- returns for a climactic battle
  • Mosasaurus — a giant aquatic reptile introduced in a memorable lagoon feeding show
  • Ankylosaurus, Apatosaurus, Gallimimus, Triceratops, Pteranodons, and more

The film’s visual effects, courtesy of ILM, pushed the boundaries of what was possible, blending practical effects with cutting-edge CGI.

Filming Locations: Hawaii Meets Louisiana

While Isla Nublar was brought to life on screen, much of Jurassic World was filmed across Hawaii and Louisiana. The lush jungles of Oahu and Kauai once again stood in for the fictional island, while sound stages and set pieces were constructed in New Orleans for interior and controlled action sequences.

The Legacy: A Billion-Dollar Dino Boom

Jurassic World was a massive box office hit, grossing over $1.6 billion worldwide. Its success launched a new trilogy:

  • Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018), directed by J.A. Bayona
  • Jurassic World: Dominion (2022), reuniting the original Jurassic Park cast with the new generation
  • And next month, Jurassic World: Rebirth promises to take the saga in an exciting new direction.

With its blend of nostalgia, thrilling action, and memorable dinosaurs, Jurassic World reminded us why we fell in love with the franchise in the first place—and ensured that the age of dinosaurs remains alive in the world of cinema.
