Kinds of Kindness is from the mind of Poor Things director.

I’ll admit, Yorgos Lanthimos has never been a director that interested me. Despite hearing a lot about his films, I never felt compelled to watch them. I even gave his recent movie, “Poor Things,” a shot but ended up turning it off halfway through. However, when I heard about “Kinds of Kindness,” I was intrigued and decided to give Lanthimos another chance. I’m glad I did. While he hasn’t completely won me over, his casting choices are always top-notch, and I couldn’t resist seeing Willem Dafoe and Jesse Plemons in action.
“Kind of Kindness” is a film that defies easy categorization. Its unique storytelling, a hallmark of Lanthimos’ work, is both intriguing and captivating. The movie weaves three extremely abstract narratives together with Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, and Willem Dafoe at the helm. It’s a film that will keep you on your toes, especially if you’re already a fan of Lanthimos’ previous works.
The film is structured as a triptych fable, exploring three distinct but thematically connected stories. The first tale follows a man without choices who attempts to seize control of his life. The second narrative centers on a policeman who is alarmed when his wife, previously thought lost at sea, returns home and seems completely different. The third story features a woman on a quest to find someone with a special ability, destined to become a significant spiritual leader.
Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, and Willem Dafoe deliver performances that are nothing short of exceptional. They bring depth and intrigue to their complex characters, making them a joy to watch. Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie, and Hunter Schafer also shine in their roles, each adding their unique flair to the film.
Verdict
I give “Kinds of Kindness” 3 out of 5 stars. It is a thought-provoking and visually arresting piece that defies easy categorization. While it may not appeal to everyone, those who appreciate Lanthimos’ distinct style will find much to admire. For me, it was a journey worth taking, and it left me curious to see where Lanthimos will take us next.
