Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton Launches Ahead of Superman Movie This Summer

DC’s Superdog Krypto gets the spotlight with a new comic and big-screen debut.

DC Comics is giving one of the DC Universe’s most beloved sidekicks a long-overdue spotlight. Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton is a brand-new five-issue limited series. It is launching June 18 and is part of DC’s “All In” publishing initiative. The series arrives just weeks before fans will see Krypto in live action for the first time, when James Gunn’s Superman hits theaters on July 11.

As part of the “Summer of Superman” campaign, this comic dives deep into Krypto’s origin story, told entirely from his perspective. Written by Ryan North (Fantastic Four) and illustrated by Mike Norton (Shazam!), it promises a heartfelt look at the universe through the eyes of a dog who crash-lands on Earth and eventually becomes Superman’s loyal companion.

“This is a chance to really define Krypto,” said North. “We’ve always known he came from Krypton and ended up with Superman—but what if we filled in that story? What if we saw how a lost dog might feel alone on a strange planet?”

The Definitive Origin of Superman’s Best Friend

The series opens on Krypton, where Krypto lives happily with his family—Jor-El, Lara, and baby Kal-El. But when a rocket test goes wrong, Krypto is launched into deep space and winds up alone on Earth, confused and surrounded by unfamiliar dangers and wonders.

North makes it clear this isn’t a talking-animal story. “Krypto doesn’t talk, and we don’t cheat by reading his thoughts either. He’s a real dog, and Mike Norton’s art says everything that needs to be said. It’s emotional, charming, and totally unique.”

The Last Dog of Krypton captures Krypto’s journey from innocent puppy to Earth’s newest (and furriest) protector. It’s a fresh take on the iconic superdog and offers something we’ve never truly seen—his story told with real heart, grit, and no shortcuts.

Big Summer for Superman and Krypto Fans

Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton is one of the key releases in DC’s “Summer of Superman” lineup. It sets the stage for both longtime comic fans and newcomers. It also tees up excitement for the character’s live-action debut in Superman, directed by James Gunn, premiering July 11. Krypto is confirmed to appear in the film, giving fans a double dose of the super pup this summer.

The debut issue features a main cover by Jae Lee, a variant cover by Dustin Nguyen, a Superman: The Movie variant by Dan Mora, and a blank sketch variant for collectors. Whether you’re a comic book reader, a moviegoer, or just a dog lover, this series is set to be one of the most emotional—and unexpected—comic events of the year.

This is your moment if you’ve ever wanted to see the DC Universe through a superdog’s eyes. It’s Krypto’s time to shine from comics to the big screen.
