Jack Black returns to his role as Po after a decade in Kung Fu Panda 4.

DreamWorks Animation’s latest installment in the beloved Kung Fu Panda franchise, aptly titled “Kung Fu Panda 4,” brings back comedy icon Jack Black in his iconic role as Po, the lovable Dragon Warrior. However, for those like myself who haven’t kept up with the series since the first film, this chapter might not be the triumphant return we were hoping for. As someone who hasn’t kept up with all the previous Kung Fu Panda films or the accompanying series, diving back into Po’s world felt nostalgic yet somewhat underwhelming. Po, now the Dragon Warrior, remains a charming and endearing character, thanks to Jack Black’s spirited performance. However, the film struggles to live up to the expectations set by its predecessors.
DreamWorks Animation finds itself in a challenging position.
Especially after recent successes like “Puss In Boots: The Last Wish,” the studio set a high bar. With “Kung Fu Panda 4,” the studio seems to miss the mark, failing to elevate the franchise to new heights. The animation, while serviceable, lacks the vibrancy and creativity seen in other recent animated films. Moreover, the plot feels formulaic, and the villain, portrayed by Viola Davis as the Chameleon, fails to leave a lasting impression.

One of the film’s limitations stems from its reduced budget, resulting in the absence of key characters like the Furious 5 and their original voice actors. This absence detracts from the overall experience and leaves a noticeable void in the storyline. While Awkwafina’s presence adds a fresh dynamic to the cast, her frequent appearances in recent projects might exhaust some viewers. Adding Ke Huy Quan to the voice cast also feels forced and would have been better utilized as a different and more prominent character. Despite these shortcomings, “Kung Fu Panda 4” still manages to captivate its primary audience: children. In theaters, young viewers were entranced by the action-packed sequences and comedic moments, proving that the film’s appeal remains strong among its target demographic.

As a standalone movie, “Kung Fu Panda 4” may not reach the heights of its predecessors or other recent animated hits. However, it still offers a fun-filled adventure for families and die-hard fans of the franchise. With its mix of humor, action, and heartwarming moments, the film ultimately succeeds in entertaining its core audience.
Verdict
I give “Kung Fu Panda 4” 3 out of 5 stars. With lackluster animation, a generic plot, and a forgettable villain, this chapter fails to live up to its predecessor’s legacy. Hopefully, DreamWorks Animation will learn from this misstep and deliver stronger offerings in the future.
