The narrative follows the story of Vivienne Le Coudy, portrayed by Vicky Krieps. She is a fiercely independent woman who embarks on a relationship with Danish immigrant Holger Olsen, played by Mortensen. Their love story begins in San Francisco, where Vivienne agrees to travel with Olsen to his home near Elk Flats, Nevada, to start a new life together.
Their budding romance faces a harsh test when the outbreak of the Civil War compels Olsen to join the Union army. He leaves Vivienne to navigate life in a town controlled by corrupt Mayor Rudolph Schiller (Danny Huston) and his unscrupulous business partner, powerful rancher Alfred Jeffries (Garret Dillahunt). Vivienne’s determination to stand her ground is further tested by Alfred’s violent and wayward son, Weston (Solly McLeod), who aggressively pursues her.
