Martyn Ford Talks Playing Shao Kahn in Mortal Kombat 2

Martyn Ford’s journey from Goliath to Shao Kahn.

Mortal Kombat 2 is set to bring one of the franchise’s most iconic villains to life, with Martyn Ford stepping into the role of Shao Kahn. The highly anticipated sequel to the 2021 reboot will hit theaters on October 24, 2025. It features an ensemble cast led by Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Tan Lewis as Cole Young, and Adeline Rudolph as Kitana.

Ford, who currently stars as Goliath in House of David on Prime Video, spoke about the similarities between the biblical giant and the fearsome Outworld emperor. “Absolutely, I’d say there are so many similarities in essence,” Ford said. “If you look at Shao Kahn and the truly great villains throughout history, they all take something from Goliath. Goliath was the original villain.”

The 6-foot-8 actor and former bodybuilder described Mortal Kombat 2 as a major opportunity to showcase his acting chops beyond physical intimidation. “For me, it was fantastic. Going from Shao Kahn to Goliath, what’s next? What could top that?” Ford said. “It’s a challenge, but also an incredible honor to bring these characters to life.”

Ford also emphasized the responsibility that comes with portraying such a beloved Mortal Kombat character.

“The Mortal Kombat audience is massive, just like the audience for biblical stories. As actors, we don’t always realize how important these characters are to people and the pressure that comes with doing them justice.”

The Mortal Kombat 2 cast includes returning and new faces. It features Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, and Mehcad Brooks as Jax. Joe Taslim will be reprising his role as Bi-Han, now transformed into Noob Saibot. New additions include Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Desmond Chiam as King Jerrod, and Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel.

Ford, who has spent nearly a decade in the industry, views Shao Kahn as a defining role in his career. “This is one of my first opportunities to truly perform, rather than just being the big bad guy who moves around, grunts, and dies. It’s been a long time coming, and I’m incredibly grateful for the chance to bring Shao Kahn to life.”

With Mortal Kombat 2’s release date locked in, fans can expect a brutal and action-packed sequel that expands the franchise’s legendary universe. As for Ford, he’s ready to wield Shao Kahn’s hammer and make his mark on the Mortal Kombat legacy
