Michael J. Fox, Denzel Washington, and Bill Nye Among 2025 Presidential Medal of Freedom Recipients

President Joe Biden has announced the 2025 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients, the nation’s highest civilian honor. The award recognizes individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant endeavors.

President Biden’s selections highlight his belief that great leaders embody faith, fairness, and decency. “These nineteen individuals have made America and the world a better place,” Biden said. “They are leaders because they are good people who have dedicated their lives to extraordinary causes.”

The honorees were celebrated during a ceremony at the White House today January 4, 2025. Among the distinguished recipients are prominent figures from activism, entertainment, sports, science, and culture.

Bono

The iconic frontman of U2, Bono, is not just known for his music but also for his activism against AIDS and global poverty. He co-founded organizations such as ONE and (RED), which have mobilized billions of dollars for AIDS relief and poverty eradication. Bono’s ability to unite politicians across the aisle led to the creation of PEPFAR, the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.

Michael J. Fox

Beloved actor and activist Michael J. Fox has not only earned accolades for his performances but also for his unwavering advocacy for Parkinson’s disease research. Diagnosed with the condition at 29, Fox established the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which has become a leading force in advancing treatments and understanding of Parkinson’s disease.

Earvin “Magic” Johnson

NBA legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson led the Los Angeles Lakers to five championships during his career. Off the court, he has transformed into a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist. His Magic Johnson Foundation supports underserved communities through education, healthcare, and job creation.

Ralph Lauren

With his eponymous brand, fashion designer Ralph Lauren has defined American style for decades. Lauren’s impact extends beyond fashion; he has been a leader in philanthropy, supporting cancer research and historic preservation efforts, including safeguarding the Star-Spangled Banner.

William Sanford Nye

Known to millions as “Bill Nye the Science Guy,” William Sanford Nye has spent decades educating and inspiring students about science. As CEO of the Planetary Society, Nye continues to advocate for space exploration and environmental sustainability.

Denzel Washington

Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington has left an indelible mark on film and theater. Beyond his artistic achievements, Washington has served as the National Spokesman for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America for over 25 years, mentoring and inspiring youth nationwide.
