Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures have unveiled a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the highly anticipated A Minecraft Movie, set to debut in theaters on April 4, 2025. The exclusive video explores the creative process behind the live-action adaptation of Minecraft, the world’s best-selling video game, showcasing how filmmakers captured the spirit of the game’s iconic moments, from surviving the first night to modding creativity.
The film is directed by Jared Hess (Nacho Libre & Napoloen Dynamite).
It stars Jason Momoa as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, Jack Black as Steve, Emma Myers (Wednesday), Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), and Sebastian Eugene Hansen (Just Mercy). Jennifer Coolidge also joins the ensemble cast. The trailer for the movie will officially drop tomorrow, teasing an imaginative adventure where four ordinary individuals are transported into the Overworld, Minecraft’s blocky wonderland.
The story follows Garrett, Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers), and Dawn (Brooks), who must navigate the Overworld’s challenges, including zombie hordes and marauding piglins. To return to their world, the group teams up with Black’s Steve, an expert crafter, to embark on a magical quest filled with lessons about creativity and courage.
The production boasts an impressive creative team. The team includes cinematographer Enrique Chediak (127 Hours). It also includes Oscar-winning production designer Grant Major (The Lord of the Rings) and VFX supervisor Dan Lemmon (The Batman). The soundtrack is helmed by Mark Mothersbaugh (Thor: Ragnarok), with music supervision by Gabe Hilfer and Karyn Rachtman.
Hess emphasized the importance of staying true to the Minecraft experience while delivering a heartfelt story. “We wanted this film to feel like stepping into the game itself,” he shared in the behind-the-scenes feature. The video also highlights how the team prioritized representation, including nods to the passionate modding community.
