Anders Holm and Mari Yamamoto Tease Romance, Fate and Titans in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2

Monarch Season 2 expands the Monsterverse with romance and reckoning.

Apple TV returns to the Monsterverse with Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and the scope feels bigger, darker and more emotional than ever.

Season one followed two siblings uncovering their family’s connection to the secretive organization Monarch. Their search pulled them into a decades-spanning mystery involving Army officer Lee Shaw, portrayed by Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell, as well as Monarch co-founder Bill Randa and scientist Keiko Miura. The story unfolded across the 1950s and present day, showing how past choices continue to shape a world threatened by Titans.

Season 2 raises the stakes. The fate of Monarch hangs in the balance as the saga returns to Kong’s Skull Island and introduces a mysterious coastal village where a mythical Titan rises from the sea. Long-buried secrets resurface, and the emotional ripple effects blur the lines between family, loyalty and betrayal.

During a recent interview, Anders Holm and Mari Yamamoto opened up about the love triangle at the heart of the story and what makes these flashbacks so essential to the larger Monsterverse.

Keiko’s Heart Between Bill and Lee

One of the season’s most powerful dynamics centers on Keiko’s connection to both Bill and Lee. Yamamoto described Keiko’s bond with Bill as something rare and almost electric.

“It’s so rare to find somebody that you can just be your most,” Yamamoto said, explaining that Bill embraces Keiko’s passion for monsters and her fearless pursuit of truth.

She noted that their relationship feels modern. They allow each other to chase their dreams and put the mission first. However, that freedom comes at a cost. Some of the foundational pieces of a traditional relationship are not prioritized.

That contrast becomes clear with Lee. According to Yamamoto, Bill may leave, but Lee stays. That steadiness gives Keiko something different, adding emotional weight to a triangle that stretches across generations.

Playing Bill Randa With a Known Fate

Fans already know where Bill Randa’s journey ultimately leads in the larger Monsterverse. That knowledge creates a unique challenge for Holm, who must make every choice feel immediate and alive.

Holm said Bill does not live cautiously. Instead, he leans into his obsession.

“If you die doing what you love, people are kind of like, well, he died doing what he loved,” Holm said.

He compared Bill to a big wave surfer chasing one more perfect ride, even if it could cost him everything. That fearless drive shapes Monarch’s early days and fuels much of the show’s tension.

Acting Opposite Kurt and Wyatt Russell

Yamamoto also reflected on working opposite both Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell as two versions of Lee Shaw. She pointed to their eyes as a striking similarity.

“You see Wyatt in Kurt’s eyes, and you see Kurt in Wyatt’s eyes,” she said, noting how both actors can communicate entire emotions without saying a word.

Holm added that their personalities differ in interesting ways. He described Kurt as the bigger personality, while Wyatt brings a more laid-back energy.  Those traits subtly shape each version of Lee and make the transition across timelines feel believable.

A Bigger Monsterverse With a Human Core

Although Titans loom large and Skull Island once again enters the picture, the heart of the story remains deeply personal. Love, ambition and obsession drive the action as much as any monster.

With secrets resurfacing and a Titan event on the horizon, Season 2 proves that in a world of giants, it is still human emotion that delivers the biggest impact.

Season two premieres globally this Friday, February 27, on Apple TV.
