Jack Quaid Shines in Novocaine, an Over-the-Top Action-Romance – Review

Jack Quaid leads a wild, absurd, and action-packed 4DX experience.

The latest adrenaline-fueled action-romance, Novocaine, delivers a pulse-pounding experience that will leave audiences reeling—especially in 4DX. This R-rated wild ride came out of nowhere, but it’s the jolt of absurdity and action we didn’t know we needed. Directed by Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, the film stars Jack Quaid (The Boys) as Nate, an ordinary guy with an extraordinary condition—he can’t feel pain. When his dream girl (Amber Midthunder) is kidnapped, Nate’s unique ability becomes his greatest weapon.

Watching Novocaine in 4DX is a cinematic thrill ride like no other. You feel every punch, every crash, and every gut-wrenching moment in full force. The seats jolt, the wind rushes past, and the intensity of each fight scene is amplified to an almost dizzying degree. However, the immersive experience takes a while to truly kick in, as the movie spends some time setting up its world and characters. But once the action starts, it’s relentless, absurd, and utterly exhilarating.

The film’s strongest asset is undoubtedly Jack Quaid.

His natural charisma and comedic timing make him a joy to watch. Quaid proves he has the chops to lead a movie independently. He’s already made a name for himself in ensemble casts, but Novocaine gives him the spotlight, and he absolutely owns it. The supporting cast, including Amber Midthunder, Ray Nicholson, and Jacob Batalon, all bring solid performances, but this is Quaid’s movie through and through.

The premise is clever: a man who doesn’t feel pain is forced into a violent rescue mission, but the execution is a bit uneven. The pacing drags at times, particularly in the first act, and while the action is top-tier, some sequences feel overextended. That being said, the film more than earns its R-rating. Expect some of the most grotesque, stomach-churning moments imaginable. If you have a weak stomach, consider yourself warned.

What makes Novocaine stand out is its intense action and unexpected humor. It’s an absolutely hilarious experience in a packed theater, with 4DX cranking up the absurdity to new heights. One moment, you’re gripping your seat from a brutal fight sequence; the next, you’re trying not to fall over from laughter. The film leans into its ridiculousness in a way that keeps it entertaining, even when the story lags.

Verdict

I give Novocain 3.5 out of 5 stars. While it isn’t perfect, it’s a riotous, high-energy spectacle that thrives on its lead’s charm and the sheer insanity of its action sequences. If you’re looking for a wildly fun theater experience—especially in 4DX—this one is worth the ride.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
