Playdate is the kind of movie that sneaks up on you — part dad comedy, part full-blown action ride. Prime Video’s newly released trailer teases an unexpectedly wild adventure. It stars Alan Ritchson (Reacher) and Kevin James (Here Comes the Boom) as two suburban dads who stumble into a mercenary-fueled nightmare.

Directed by Luke Greenfield (Let’s Be Cops, The Girl Next Door), Playdate looks to deliver the best of both worlds: laugh-out-loud dad humor and high-octane action. The film’s tone bounces between outrageous comedy and edge-of-your-seat spectacle, giving fans a fresh twist on the classic buddy formula.
The trailer highlights the chemistry between Ritchson and James — a pairing that feels both absurd and perfect. Ritchson brings his usual intensity and physicality, while James plays the everyman caught way out of his depth. Together, they form the comedy duo audiences didn’t know they needed.
Suburban Dads Meet Mayhem
The story follows Brian, played by James. He is a recently unemployed accountant who agrees to a simple playdate with Jeff (Ritchson), a charming and oddly prepared stay-at-home dad. What should’ve been an easy afternoon of small talk and backyard games turns into a life-or-death chase after the pair, and a ruthless team of mercenaries targets their kids.
From minivan car chases to slapstick shootouts, Playdate piles on the chaos while poking fun at the suburban dad lifestyle. It’s “dad life meets die-hard” in the best way possible.
The Cast and Creative Team
In addition to Ritchson and James, the film features Sarah Chalke, Alan Tudyk, Benjamin Pajak, Banks Pierce, Hiro Kanagawa, Stephen Root, and Isla Fisher. The screenplay is written by Neil Goldman, whose comedic chops help balance the film’s mix of absurdity and action.
Greenfield’s direction once again channels his knack for high-energy set pieces and unexpected heart, turning an ordinary day in the suburbs into a cinematic thrill ride.
