Ryan Hurst Cast as Kratos in Prime Video’s “God of War” Series for Prime Video.

Ryan Hurst has been tapped to play Kratos in Prime Video’s live-action “God of War,” a new series from Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios.
The move gives the show an actor who already knows the world. Hurst voiced Thor in PlayStation’s “God of War Ragnarök,” and his performance earned a BAFTA nomination, making him a familiar name to longtime fans of the franchise.
Prime Video’s series has a two-season order, with pre-production underway in Vancouver and casting now in motion. The show is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions. Emmy Award-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye is set to direct the first two episodes.
Who Is Kratos in “God of War”?
Kratos is the face of the franchise and one of gaming’s most iconic characters. He is Spartan by birth and a god by nature. Raised in a harsh martial culture, he climbs the ranks as a commander. However, one fateful deal with Ares, the Greek God of War, costs him his soul in exchange for victory.

Across the franchise, Kratos battles mortals, monsters, and gods. He becomes known for his stoic presence, unmatched combat skill, and tragic past. In the live-action series, his story will closely follow the path of the last two games. That era introduces a new center to his life: his 10-year-old son, Atreus.
The Story Prime Video Is Adapting
“God of War” follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they begin a journey to spread the ashes of Kratos’ wife, Faye, who is also Atreus’ mother.
As danger closes in, Kratos tries to teach his son how to be a better god. At the same time, Atreus pushes his father toward something harder: being a better human. That father-son dynamic changed the franchise when the games shifted into their modern era. It is also expected to be the heartbeat of the live-action show.
Why Ryan Hurst Makes Sense for Kratos
Hurst has spent more than two decades building a career on intense, memorable characters. He is best known for his work on FX’s “Sons of Anarchy.”
He also appeared on AMC’s “The Walking Dead” and starred in Disney+’s “The Mysterious Benedict Society.” His TV work includes “Bates Motel,” “Outsiders,” Amazon’s “Bosch,” NBC’s “Medium,” and SyFy’s Spielberg-produced miniseries “Taken.”
On the film side, he broke out in “Remember the Titans” opposite Denzel Washington. He also directed second unit footage for the movie. His credits include “Saving Private Ryan,” “We Were Soldiers,” “Patch Adams,” “Rules of Engagement,” “The Ladykillers,” and the animated hit “Rango.” More recently, Hurst wrapped work on Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” sharing the screen with Matt Damon and Tom Holland.
Off camera, he brings a real-world edge that fits Kratos’ physicality. Hurst is also a writer, director, producer, editor, veteran freefly skydiver, motorcycle enthusiast, certified force-free dog trainer, and a student and teacher of Kundalini yoga.
If Prime Video wants a Kratos who feels lived-in, worn down, and dangerous, Hurst has the resume for it.
