Watch Ryan Gosling try to save Earth in Project Hail Mary.

Academy Award nominee Ryan Gosling is taking on one of the most ambitious sci-fi roles of his career in Project Hail Mary, the upcoming action-adventure based on Andy Weir’s best-selling novel. The first trailer for the film just dropped, teasing a breathtaking space odyssey that combines mystery, survival, and an unlikely friendship in the darkest reaches of the cosmos.
In Project Hail Mary, Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a mild-mannered sixth-grade science teacher who wakes up on a spaceship 11.9 light-years away from Earth with zero memory of who he is or why he’s there. As flashes of memory return, Grace realizes he’s the sole survivor of a last-chance mission to save Earth from total annihilation. The sun is dying, and a mysterious substance is draining its energy. Armed only with his scientific wits and a classroom’s worth of knowledge, Grace must figure out how to reverse humanity’s fate.

But he’s not entirely alone. As his journey unfolds, Grace discovers an unexpected ally that changes everything he thought he knew about life in the universe. The trailer hints at this surprising twist without giving too much away, showing a blend of stunning visuals and the signature humor that directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, The Lego Movie) bring to their projects.
The screenplay is written by Drew Goddard, who previously adapted Weir’s other hit novel, The Martian, for the big screen. Joining Gosling in the cast are Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub.
Only in Theaters and IMAX March 20, 2026
With a mix of big ideas and relatable humanity, Project Hail Mary appears poised to join other intelligent sci-fi hits that prompt us to ask: What does it truly take to save the world? And what happens when the person chosen for the job is just a regular guy with no one but himself — and maybe a friend from beyond the stars — to lean on?
