“Red One” is a high-energy holiday adventure.

“Red One” is a holiday action adventure that offers an imaginative take on Christmas. Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans team up in a fun, unexpected team-up. Directed by Jake Kasdan, this film sees Johnson’s Head of North Pole Security joining forces with Evans’s world-renowned bounty hunter to rescue no other than Santa Claus, codenamed “Red One.” As they embark on a globe-trotting mission to save Christmas, the story takes some bold risks that mostly pay off.
There’s a lot to love here, starting with the thrilling dynamic between Johnson and Evans. Their chemistry is infectious and adds charm to the story’s mix of action and humor. The North Pole itself is a highlight, with expansive world-building that makes it feel like an entirely new universe. Johnson and Evans bring life to this holiday realm with big action scenes, delivering plenty of entertainment even when the pacing drags.
One of the movie’s strongest points is its world-building. The North Pole is reimagined with fantastic visuals and innovative twists on classic Christmas lore. Krampus, in particular, steals the show with his edgy look and a memorable sled that adds to his villainous charisma. Played with a wicked charm, this Krampus might be the breakout star for fans who enjoy their Christmas villains on the dark side.

Kiernan Shipka also impresses as a villain, adding depth and flair to her role, while Bonnie Hunt and J.K. Simmons make fantastic Mrs. and Mr. Claus. Their warmth and chemistry on-screen add a grounded, traditional touch to the otherwise modern, high-energy adventure, leaving viewers wanting more of this Santa and Mrs. Claus duo.

Yet, while “Red One” hits many notes right, it stumbles in places. The pacing could have been tighter, as certain scenes drag with excessive dialogue, which detracts from the momentum. Additionally, “Red One” isn’t particularly family-friendly for a Christmas movie. Strong and frequent language and surprisingly risqué beach scenes make this more suitable for older viewers than a family audience. It’s also disappointing that Lucy Liu feels underused in her role, which is a missed opportunity given her talent. While much of the North Pole’s visuals are impressive, some CGI creatures are less convincing and could have used polish.

Verdict
I give “Red One” 4 out of 5 stars. It is an ambitious, action-packed holiday movie with a fresh twist. With strong leads, imaginative world-building, and an unforgettable Krampus, it’s a worthy addition to holiday entertainment – leave the little ones out of this adventure.

I agree with your review. The language was completely unnecessary. You’re right. The cursing makes it more adult than for kids. Omit that and it’s more suited for kids and would be something worth viewing every Christmas. Good overall story and possesses a great moral of redemption and goodness.
