Rental Family Trailer: Brendan Fraser Finds Connection in Tokyo Drama

Brendan Fraser finds a sense of belonging in Tokyo in the upcoming drama ‘Rental Family’.

Brendan Fraser returns to the big screen this fall in Rental Family. It is a heartwarming and emotionally complex drama set in modern-day Tokyo. The film opens in theaters on November 25. It is helmed by acclaimed director HIKARI (37 Seconds), who also co-wrote the screenplay with Stephen Blahut.

A Unique Role in a Unique World

Fraser stars as a struggling American actor living in Tokyo who takes an unexpected job with a Japanese “rental family” agency. In this service, actors are hired to play roles in the lives of strangers. They can play from long-lost relatives to missing loved ones. As he slips into the lives of his clients, Fraser’s character begins to blur the lines between scripted roles and real human connection.

The film delves into the emotional toll and ethical questions that arise from filling these surrogate positions, presenting a tender and often bittersweet examination of loneliness, identity, and what it truly means to belong.

An International Cast and Creative Team

Joining Fraser is a powerful Japanese cast. It includes Takehiro Hira (Lost Girls & Love Hotels), Mari Yamamoto (Pachinko), Shannon Gorman, and legendary actor Akira Emoto. The film is produced by Eddie Vaisman, Julia Lebedev, HIKARI, and Shin Yamaguchi.

HIKARI first gained international attention with her debut feature, 37 Seconds. She now brings her signature warmth and sensitivity to this new project. This film will delve into Tokyo’s unique subcultures with authenticity and care.

A Story About Connection

At its core, Rental Family is a story about finding purpose in unexpected places and rediscovering the human need for connection. As Fraser’s character immerses himself in the fictional roles assigned to him, he finds himself facing real emotions, moral dilemmas, and the fragile beauty of relationships—both staged and sincere.

Fraser, who won widespread acclaim for The Whale, continues to take on meaningful roles that showcase his emotional depth and onscreen vulnerability. Rental Family promises to be another moving chapter in his celebrated career.
