Steve Zahn, Audrey Zahn, Rick Gomez & Mackenzie Ziegler Open Up About the Emotional Journey of She Dances – INTERVIEW

She Dances is a story about healing through connection.

She Dances is an emotionally resonant story about family, grief, and rediscovery told through the lens of dance and personal growth. Directed by Rick Gomez and co-written with Steve Zahn, the film follows a father and daughter forced to reconnect while traveling to the Young Miss Southeast Regional Dance Finals, where unresolved emotions rise to the surface.

The film balances deeply human humor with emotional vulnerability, creating a grounded and authentic portrait of how relationships evolve through hardship. Across two conversations with the film’s cast and creative team, it becomes clear that She Dances is as personal behind the scenes as it is on screen.

Steve Zahn on Playing a Father Navigating Grief

Steve Zahn’s portrayal of Jason captures the complexity of a parent trying to hold everything together while quietly struggling internally. Rather than presenting a perfect father figure, the film leans into imperfection, allowing audiences to recognize familiar emotional truths.

“I think the problem with Jason is sometimes masking is what he thinks is trying, and it’s not helping,” Zahn explained. “There’s this kind of facade over him, and underneath is grief.”

That emotional conflict becomes central to the film’s journey, particularly as Jason begins to realize that his daughter understands more than he expects.

“This young person who has less experience in the world is the one that guides him,” Zahn said. “She’s the guru.”

The role allows Zahn to explore vulnerability without losing the character’s relatability, presenting a father who makes mistakes but continues trying to move forward.

Throughout the film, small details help create authenticity, including humorous moments that reflect real-life parenting missteps. Zahn noted how those subtle imperfections help ground the story.

“It’s those moments that feel real,” he shared, emphasizing how the film’s emotional weight works because of its honesty.

Audrey Zahn Brings Emotional Discipline to Claire

Audrey Zahn’s performance as Claire reflects the mindset of a dancer shaped by discipline, emotional restraint, and internal strength. Drawing from her own experience in dance, Zahn understood the quiet intensity required for the role.

“I just kind of always knew what was going on in her head,” she said. “There’s a reason why she kind of pushes everything down and feels like she needs to be kind of neutral most of the time. She’s grown up a dancer, which I’ve also grown up a dancer, and we’re extremely disciplined.”

Her connection to the material allowed her to approach Claire with authenticity, creating a character that feels both guarded and deeply empathetic.

Zahn also spoke about how relationships between dancers often mirror family bonds, influencing Claire’s connection with Kat.

“I grew up with other dancers that became like sisters or brothers to me,” she explained. “So it felt very connected to my real life.”

That realism helps anchor the film’s emotional stakes, particularly as Claire balances ambition with unresolved personal struggles.

Mackenzie Ziegler and Audrey Zahn Create an Authentic Friendship

The friendship between Claire and Kat is one of the film’s strongest emotional anchors. Mackenzie Ziegler shared how the connection developed naturally through rehearsals and time spent working closely together.

“Our characters definitely developed a lot more on set while we were filming,” Ziegler said. “Just bouncing off of each other and bringing our actual friendship into the film.”

Because both performers have dance backgrounds, they were able to build chemistry quickly during training sessions.

“If you’re rehearsing with someone and learning a dance, that’s an easy way to connect,” Audrey Zahn added.

Their real-life camaraderie helped shape scenes that feel spontaneous and genuine, including a memorable Jennifer Coolidge-inspired moment that became a standout example of the film’s humor.

“I think I did my Jennifer Coolidge and she was like, no way, I do this all the time,” Ziegler said. “And then we talked like that for the rest of the time.”

These moments of levity balance the heavier themes of the film, creating a story that feels emotionally layered without becoming overwhelming.

Rick Gomez on Directing His First Feature Film

For Rick Gomez, She Dances represents a significant milestone as his feature film directorial debut. The project developed organically through conversations with Steve Zahn, eventually evolving into a story that felt deeply personal to both creators.

“It just became this incredibly cathartic, beautiful conversation with Steve in the writing process,” Gomez explained.

Gomez emphasized the importance of collaboration in shaping the film’s emotional tone, particularly as the cast began contributing ideas during rehearsals.

“Audrey and Mackenzie became really close, and they started to build things together,” Gomez said. “We just always said yes to it because it was the right thing to say yes to.”

The film also features creative visual storytelling techniques, including split-screen sequences that highlight emotional connections between characters separated by distance.

“The purpose was to show that Claire and Jason were still connected,” Gomez explained. “They’re hitting the microwave buttons at the same time, they’re talking about the same cat. You get to experience that.”

These stylistic choices reinforce the film’s central themes of connection and shared experience.

A Collaboration Built on Trust

Ziegler spoke about Gomez’s leadership on set and the trust he fostered throughout the production.

“He gives great notes and gives a sense of comfort,” she said. “It is so important to have that trust on set.”

Gomez described the experience as uniquely fulfilling, noting how rare it is to finish a project and still miss the process of making it.

“It’s rare that you come away from a project and you miss the thing you had so much,” he said.

That sense of shared purpose is evident in the final film, which feels cohesive in both tone and performance.

Humor and Humanity Balance Emotional Weight

While She Dances explores grief and reconciliation, it never loses sight of humor and warmth. Moments of improvisation and collaboration helped create scenes that feel spontaneous and memorable.

The Jennifer Coolidge-inspired accent became one of those moments, demonstrating how creative freedom allowed the actors to discover unexpected opportunities within the story.

The balance between humor and emotional honesty ultimately helps the film resonate with audiences, reinforcing the idea that healing often includes both reflection and laughter.

A Film About Growth, Discipline, and Moving Forward

At its core, She Dances is about understanding how personal loss can shape identity while still allowing room for growth. The film’s emphasis on discipline, emotional honesty, and meaningful relationships creates a story that feels relatable across generations.

By combining strong performances with thoughtful direction, the film presents a compelling narrative about how people reconnect through shared experiences.

The collaboration between cast and filmmakers results in a story that feels authentic, grounded, and emotionally impactful.
