Maul Returns in New Animated Series ‘Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord’

Sam Witwer reprises role in new Disney+ series announced at Star Wars Celebration Japan.

Lucasfilm has officially announced Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, a new animated series set to debut on Disney+ in 2026. The surprise reveal came during the 20th anniversary panel for Lucasfilm Animation at Star Wars Celebration Japan. Actor Sam Witwer made a special appearance to confirm he will once again voice the fan-favorite character.

The series follows Maul, the former Sith Lord once known as Darth Maul, as he attempts to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet still untouched by the growing grip of the Galactic Empire. It will be set after the events of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The series will continue the character’s journey through the shadows of the galaxy’s underworld.

Witwer has voiced Maul across several animated projects.

He has been part of The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, helping redefine the character for a new generation of fans. The character was first introduced in The Phantom Menace in 1999. Maul shocked audiences with his dual-bladed lightsaber and fierce battle against Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi. Though presumed dead after being cut in half by Kenobi, Maul returned in The Clone Wars. It revealed he had survived through sheer rage and the power of the dark side.

Since then, Maul has played a significant role in Star Wars storytelling. He even made a surprise cameo in Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), which teased his growing influence in the galaxy’s criminal underworld. Shadow Lord is expected to fully explore this evolution. It will offer a deeper dive into his reign as a shadowy figure in the post-Clone Wars era.

Maul – Shadow Lord is currently in production and slated to premiere exclusively on Disney+ in 2026.
