The King of Koopas is back, but working through some things in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Bowser is returning to the big screen, but he is not the massive menace fans remember. Instead, Illumination and Nintendo are reintroducing the character as a pint-sized version of himself, tucked away in a tiny castle where he spends his days painting, decorating, and convincing himself he is “totally fine.”
Jack Black returns to voice the beloved villain in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which releases on April 3, 2026. Although Bowser is still recovering from his last run-in with Mario, he channels that emotional turmoil into artistic expression. Yet his creative retreat offers only a temporary distraction. The Koopa King’s demons always find their way back to him.
A New Chapter in a Billion-Dollar Universe
The film follows The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned more than $1.3 billion worldwide in 2023. Illumination founder Chris Meledandri and Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto return as producers.

Once again, directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic lead the animated adventure. Matthew Fogel also returns as screenwriter, continuing the storytelling style that connected with global audiences. Composer Brian Tyler is back as well, bringing familiar musical energy to a new galaxy-spanning story.
A Star-Stacked Cast Expands the Universe
Chris Pratt reprises his role as Mario, with Anya Taylor-Joy returning as Princess Peach. Charlie Day once again voices Luigi. Keegan-Michael Key, Kevin Michael Richardson, and Jack Black all return to play their iconic characters.
However, the sequel features two major additions. Brie Larson joins the cast as Rosalina, the cosmic guardian who plays a key role in the Super Mario Galaxy games. Benny Safdie steps in as Bowser Jr., bringing a new dynamic to the father-son relationship—especially now that Bowser is busy reinventing himself as a misunderstood artist.
A Story That Reaches Beyond Mushroom Kingdom
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie takes viewers far from the familiar landscapes of the first film. This new chapter delves into the stars, the cosmos, and the universe’s mysterious corners. Meanwhile, Mario and Peach face new challenges as they cross paths with Rosalina and the Lumas.

Bowser’s mini-castle may be small, but the emotional stakes—along with his unfinished business with Mario—remain enormous with Bowser Jr. taking on the reins.
Illumination and Nintendo will release the film worldwide on April 3, 2026.
