Antonio Banderas’ Zorro rides again in The Legend of Zorro.

Two decades ago, The Legend of Zorro brought back the masked hero who captured audiences’ imaginations in 1998’s The Mask of Zorro. Released on October 28, 2005, the film reunited Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Don Alejandro de la Vega and his fiery wife, Elena, in a high-stakes adventure blending romance, rebellion, and swordplay.
A Hero’s Legacy Continues
Directed by Martin Campbell—who also helmed the first installment—The Legend of Zorro picks up several years after the events of the original film. Alejandro, now living a quieter life as a husband and father, must once again don the mask to protect California’s bid for statehood. When a secret organization plots to sabotage the territory’s future, Zorro faces his most personal battle yet—balancing duty to his people with devotion to his family.
Banderas effortlessly returns as the dashing vigilante, combining charisma and physical prowess with the humor fans loved from the first film. Zeta-Jones shines as Elena, proving she’s just as formidable with a sword as her husband. Their chemistry remains one of the franchise’s defining strengths, adding emotional depth to the action-packed sequel.

From Mexico to New Zealand
Production on The Legend of Zorro took place primarily in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, where sweeping landscapes and rustic architecture recreated 19th-century California. Additional footage was filmed in New Zealand, providing the movie with its expansive scope and stunning backdrops.
Box Office and Legacy
While the film didn’t match the critical and commercial success of its predecessor, The Legend of Zorro still drew solid box office numbers, earning over $140 million worldwide. It cemented the franchise’s legacy as a rare blend of old-fashioned adventure and heartfelt storytelling in a modern Hollywood landscape increasingly driven by CGI spectacle.
The Mask of Zorro set the stage in 1998 with its dynamic mix of action, humor, and romance, revitalizing the classic pulp hero for a new generation. Its sequel, though lighter in tone, remains a beloved continuation—one that celebrated family and heroism as much as sword fights and stunts.
Celebrating 20 Years of Zorro
As The Legend of Zorro celebrates its 20th anniversary, fans still look back fondly on its mix of heart, humor, and high adventure. Together, both films stand as a testament to classic swashbuckling storytelling—an era when heroes fought with courage, charm, and a flick of the blade.
