The Oblongs, A Forgotten Animated Series Featuring Will Ferrell

‘The Oblongs’ is an animated gem lost too soon.

In the realm of animated television, some gems shine brightly, captivating audiences with their unique brand of humor and storytelling. One such gem, sadly overlooked by many, is “The Oblongs.” A quirky animated series that aired in 2001, “The Oblongs” boasted an impressive voice cast, including the comedic talents of Will Ferrell, along with creator Angus Oblong and writer Jace Richdale. Despite its promising premise and star-studded lineup, the show only managed to produce a single season, leaving fans disappointed and craving more.

Created by Angus Oblong, whose distinctive artistic style was the visual foundation for the series, “The Oblongs” offered a darkly comedic take on suburban life. Set in the fictional town of Hill Valley, the show centered around the dysfunctional Oblong family, who, due to toxic waste exposure, had various physical and mental deformities. Led by patriarch Bob Oblong (voiced by Will Ferrell), the family navigated the absurdities of their everyday lives with a blend of humor and heart.

Supporting the eccentric Oblong clan were a host of equally eccentric characters.

It includes Bob’s wife Pickles (voiced by Jean Smart), their three children – Biff (Randy Sklar), Chip (Pamela Adlon), and Beth (Jeannie Elias) – as well as their friends and neighbors. Each episode of “The Oblongs” delivered a mix of social satire, dark humor, and surrealism, tackling themes such as environmentalism, classism, and the importance of family bonds. Despite its critical acclaim and loyal fanbase, “The Oblongs” struggled to find its footing in the competitive landscape of animated television. Hindered by scheduling conflicts and network interference, the show failed to gain the widespread recognition it deserved. After airing just 13 episodes, “The Oblongs” was unceremoniously canceled, leaving fans mourning the loss of what could have been.

Will Ferrell, known for his comedy and knack for character-driven roles, brought a unique energy to the role of Bob Oblong, infusing the character with equal parts charm and absurdity. Alongside Ferrell, creator Angus Oblong lent his own voice talents to the series, imbuing the characters with his signature wit and quirkiness. Rounding out the cast was Jace Richdale, whose sharp writing added depth and humor to the show’s already rich tapestry.

Despite its short-lived run, “The Oblongs” remains a cult classic beloved by those who appreciate its offbeat humor and unconventional storytelling. While its time on the air may have been brief, its impact continues to be felt in the world of animation, inspiring future creators to push the boundaries of what can be achieved in the medium. As fans continue to champion its legacy, “The Oblongs” stands as a testament to the power of creativity and the enduring appeal of the weird and wonderful.
