Ishana Night Shyamalan channels her father’s legacy in ‘The Watchers.’

“The Watchers,” produced by M. Night Shyamalan and directed by his daughter, Ishana Night Shyamalan, is a gripping debut that echoes the chilling tension of her father’s early work. Based on A.M. Shine’s novel, the film stars Dakota Fanning as Mina, a 28-year-old artist stranded in a haunting Irish forest. As she seeks shelter, Mina joins three strangers, and together, they face nightly terror from unseen creatures watching their every move.
Right from the start, “The Watchers” captivates the audience with its powerful opening and the nostalgic joy of witnessing Dakota Fanning evolve into a dominant presence on screen. The film, reminiscent of classic M. Night Shyamalan, seamlessly blends fantasy and thriller elements. Ishana’s direction, while paying tribute to her father’s style, carves out her distinct cinematic voice, a fusion of eerie folklore and tangible suspense.
An interview with Ishana Night Shyamalan.
Ishana shared the advice her father gave her and the reason behind her choice to adapt Shine’s visceral novel. She also shared her process of combining horror and thriller elements, which is seamless in this film and results in an otherworldly and firmly rooted reality. Watch below!
The film’s tension is relentless, with heart-pounding moments and early surprises that capitalize on Irish folklore. Ishana’s attention to detail in creating the film’s world is commendable. The production was set in the evocative Ballinastoe Woods in County Wicklow. the location immerses the audience in an environment that feels timeless and foreboding. The coop, designed for two-way observation, becomes a character in its own right. It amplifies the claustrophobia and paranoia of being constantly watched.

While “The Watchers” excels in building suspense and setting the mood, it could have delved deeper into the realms of horror. The film, at times, feels like a dark fairy tale, with a Grimm-like ambiance that could have been enhanced by a more intense horror approach. Nevertheless, the film is thoroughly engaging. It establishes a somber, immersive mood that stays with the audience long after the credits have rolled. Dakota Fanning’s portrayal of Mina is a highlight, capturing the character’s journey from isolation to a fierce determination to survive. The supporting cast, including Georgina Campbell, Olwen Fouéré, and Oliver Finnegan, deliver strong performances that enhance the film’s eerie atmosphere.
Verdict
I give “The Watchers” 3.5 out of 5 stars. Ishana Night Shyamalan has made a strong start in her feature film career. It showcases her ability to craft a compelling narrative with a distinctive visual style. Despite wishing for more horror, “The Watchers” is notable in contemporary thriller cinema. I look forward to seeing what she creates next.
