Max drops the act as Warner Bros. Discovery revives HBO Max branding.

In a move that underscores its commitment to high-quality programming, Warner Bros. Discovery announced Tuesday at its Upfront presentation that its flagship streaming service Max will again be known as HBO Max starting this summer.
The decision marks a full-circle moment for the company, which dropped “HBO” from the platform’s name just last year in an effort to broaden its audience and highlight a wider range of content. Warner Bros. Discovery says the rebrand is a strategic response to shifting consumer behavior and an evolving content landscape.
“No one today is saying they want more content,” the company stated during the presentation. “But most consumers are saying they want better content.”

HBO has long been a symbol of prestige television, and company executives believe leaning into the brand’s legacy is key to distinguishing the platform in an increasingly crowded streaming market.
The announcement comes as WBD’s streaming business shows strong momentum, with nearly $3 billion in profitability gains over the last two years and 22 million new subscribers added globally in the past year. The company is targeting more than 150 million subscribers by the end of 2026.

Reintroducing the HBO name aims to reinforce the platform’s identity as a destination for premium storytelling while signaling Warner Bros. Discovery’s commitment to continuously adapting based on consumer data and insights.
“HBO has consistently delivered quality and distinctive stories for over 50 years,” the company said. “Bringing back the HBO brand in the streaming experience will further differentiate our service and enhance the subscriber journey.”
The rebranded HBO Max is expected to launch later this summer.
