Yoshi Finally Revealed for the Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Yoshi debuts in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie update with an orchestra score in the works.

Nintendo has officially revealed Yoshi for the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Shigeru Miyamoto shared the news in a new video update. He also thanked fans for the strong response to the first trailer, which debuted last November.

The update answers a question many viewers have been asking since that first look. Where was Yoshi? Miyamoto confirmed the fan-favorite dinosaur will appear in the film. Moreover, he said Yoshi will play an active role alongside other familiar characters.

Yoshi Joins the Galaxy Trip

Miyamoto framed Yoshi’s arrival as a full-circle moment for the franchise. He pointed to Yoshi’s long history across Mario’s adventures. Yoshi first appeared in Super Mario World, which grew from an early idea. That idea involved Mario riding a small dinosaur.

Next, Miyamoto highlighted Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island. In that game, Yoshi protected Baby Mario and tossed eggs at enemies. Since then, Yoshi has remained a staple in the series. He has also continued to show up in 3D entries.

This time, Illumination’s artists helped translate that legacy to the big screen. The team worked to bring Yoshi to life for an animated feature. Miyamoto said the new video offers a better sense of how the character fits the movie’s world.

Illumination Shifts to Post-Production

Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri shared a clear production milestone. He said the movie’s animation is fully complete. After that final animation work, the production moved into post-production.

Now, the teams are focusing on sound design and music. Meledandri said the goal is to heighten the scope of the new galactic adventure. The filmmakers are building the soundscape to match the film’s scale.

Meledandri also noted key collaborators for the next phase. Directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are working closely with Nintendo. In addition, they are partnering with Skywalker Sound to shape the audio experience.

A 70-Piece Orchestra and Familiar Themes

Composer Brian Tyler is scoring the film. Meledandri said Tyler is weaving themes from the Super Mario Galaxy games into the music. He is also recording the score with a 70-piece orchestra.

That approach signals a big, sweeping sound for the sequel. It also suggests the movie will lean into the emotional lift fans remember from the games. Meanwhile, sound design and music remain central priorities as the film heads toward release.

What We Know About the Film

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie continues Nintendo and Illumination’s partnership after The Super Mario Bros. Movie. That 2023 film earned more than $1.3 billion worldwide. Both films are produced by Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto.

The cast includes Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Benny Safdie, Kevin Michael Richardson, and Brie Larson.

Miyamoto ended the update with a promise. He said many recognizable characters will have active parts in the story, including Yoshi. He also expressed excitement for the film’s planned release on April 1st.
