Wicked leads 2024 Astra Awards nominations with record 20 Nods.
The Hollywood Creative Alliance (HCA) has unveiled the 2024 Astra Film and Creative Arts Awards nominees. Universal Pictures’ Wicked set a historic milestone with 20 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress for Cynthia Erivo, and Best Director for Jon M. Chu. Warner Bros. Pictures’ Dune: Part Two followed with 16 nominations, and Netflix’s Emilia Pérez earned 11.
The Astra Awards ceremonies will take place on Sunday, December 8, 2024, at the Taglyan Complex in Los Angeles. They will be divided into two events: the Astra Creative Arts Awards luncheon and the Astra Film Awards dinner. Both ceremonies will be hosted by distinguished comedians, with Peter Kim helming the Creative Arts Awards and Emmy and NAACP Award-winning Loni Love leading the Film Awards. Select categories from the postponed Astra TV Awards will also be presented.
Dominating the Nominees
Following a record-breaking box office weekend, Wicked emerged as the most-nominated film in the HCA’s eight-year history. Key nominations include:
- Best Picture
- Best Actress (Cynthia Erivo)
- Best Supporting Actress (Ariana Grande)
- Best Director (Jon M. Chu)
Dune: Part Two, directed by Denis Villeneuve, secured nominations in Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay, along with a nod for Best Cast Ensemble. Netflix’s Emilia Pérez, a Cannes favorite, garnered 11 nominations, including Best Picture and dual Best Supporting Actress nods for Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña.
Other top contenders include:
- Mubi’s The Substance (10 nominations)
- Amazon MGM’s Challengers and Paramount Pictures’ Gladiator II (9 nominations each)
- A24’s The Brutalist (8 nominations)
Special Recognition
The HCA will honor notable artisans during the Creative Arts Awards:
- Costume Designer Colleen Atwood will receive the inaugural Artisan Icon Award.
- Composer Kris Bowers will be presented with the Artisan Achievement Award.
- Cinematographer Giovanni Ribisi will be recognized with the Artisan Breakthrough Award.
