“One Battle After Another,” “Sinners,” and “Sentimental Value” top Astra nominations.

The Hollywood Creative Alliance announced the nominees for the 2025 Astra Film Awards, setting the stage for one of the most competitive awards seasons in recent years. The ceremony will take place on Friday, January 9, 2026, in Los Angeles and will stream live on KNEKT.tv and YouTube. The host, venue, and honorary recipients will be revealed in the coming weeks.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s Film Takes the Lead
Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another dominated the nominations with 11 total nods. The film earned recognition in major categories, including Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical and Best Director. Additionally, Leonardo DiCaprio received a nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, and the film secured four supporting acting nominations for Teyana Taylor, Regina Hall, Sean Penn, and Benicio del Toro.
This year marks one of Anderson’s strongest showings with the HCA, and the film’s large ensemble appears to have resonated with voters.
“Sinners” and “Sentimental Value” Tie for Second
Ryan Coogler’s Sinners and Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value followed with nine nominations each. Both films earned placements for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.
Michael B. Jordan is nominated for Best Actor for Sinners, while Renate Reinsve continues her awards momentum with a Best Actress nomination for Sentimental Value. The strong showing for both films reflects a year defined by character-driven dramas and international storytelling.
Other Top Contenders
A24’s Marty Supreme and Focus Features’ Hamnet each earned six nominations. Universal’s Wicked: For Good, Warner Bros.’ Weapons, Netflix’s Jay Kelly, Netflix’s Frankenstein, Focus Features’ Bugonia, Netflix’s Train Dreams, and Neon’s No Other Choice rounded out the next tier of top-performing films with four to five nominations each.
HCA Implements Expanded Categories
This year, the Hollywood Creative Alliance officially split its Best Picture and acting fields into two branches: Drama and Comedy or Musical. The change was put to a full vote of the 310-member organization, with 60 percent supporting the updated structure.
According to the HCA, the expanded categories aim to give equal weight to films across tonal and genre divides, allowing comedies and musicals to compete more freely.
