Halloweentown High Turns 20: The Last Magical Ride with Kimberly J. Brown

Remembering Halloweentown High on its 20th Anniversary.

Halloweentown High, the third installment in Disney Channel’s beloved Halloweentown franchise, celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Released on October 8, 2004, the film continued the magical adventures of Marnie Piper, played by Kimberly J. Brown. It became a fan favorite for its blend of humor, magic, and spooky fun. This installment was notable as the last in the series to feature Brown in the lead role, marking the end of an era for fans of the young witch.

The film follows Marnie as she makes a bold bet with the Halloweentown Council, risking her family’s magic on a daring experiment: to bring a group of magical creatures from Halloweentown to attend a normal high school in the human world. Her goal is to prove that both worlds can coexist peacefully. However, the stakes are high; if anything goes wrong, her family will lose their powers forever.

As Marnie and her friends navigate the challenges of fitting in at high school, a shadowy force known as the Knights of the Iron Dagger threatens to expose the magical students and endanger the entire plan. With the help of her grandmother Aggie, played by legendary actress Debbie Reynolds, Marnie works to protect her family’s magic while embracing the importance of unity between the two worlds.

It included Joey Zimmerman as Dylan Piper, Marnie’s younger brother, and Emily Roeske as their younger sister, Sophie. Clifton Davis joined the cast as Principal Phil Flanagan, the high school’s unsuspecting leader. Finn Wittrock, later known for his roles in American Horror Story, made one of his early career appearances as Cody, Marnie’s love interest.

Initially intended to be the final film in the Halloweentown series, the movie left a lasting impact on viewers. However, in 2006, a fourth installment, Return to Halloweentown, was released, with Sara Paxton taking over the role of Marnie. This decision disappointed many fans who had grown attached to Brown’s portrayal. During my moderated panel with Brown at Super Hero Comic Con, she told the fans that she was definitely up to return and would love to bring her Marnie back for another installment.

Two decades later, Halloweentown High remains a cherished part of Disney Channel’s Halloween tradition, continuing to enchant audiences with its message of acceptance and timeless, magical appeal. You can watch the Halloweentown films now on Disney+.
