Danny Boyle and Alex Garland return for 28 Years Later.

In a thrilling development for horror fans and cinephiles alike, Deadline announced that the highly anticipated new 28 Years Later trilogy, helmed by acclaimed director Danny Boyle and backed by Sony Pictures, is picking up steam, boasting some serious star power. According to sources close to the project, none other than Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes have officially signed for a new installment, a sequel to the groundbreaking original 28 Days Later.

Let’s take a quick trip down memory lane for those unfamiliar with the pulse-pounding franchise.

Released in 2002, “28 Days Later” was a game-changer in the zombie genre. Boyle directed it and wrote the Screenplay. Set in a post-apocalyptic England ravaged by a deadly virus, the film follows a small group of survivors navigating through hordes of infected individuals, exploring themes of isolation, survival, and the human condition. The movie’s gritty realism, tense atmosphere, and standout performances captivated audiences worldwide, earning critical acclaim and grossing over $82 million at the global box office.

Building upon the success of its predecessor, “28 Weeks Later” hit theaters in 2007, directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. Set six months after the initial outbreak; the sequel delves deeper into the aftermath of the epidemic as the remnants of society attempt to rebuild amidst ongoing threats from the infected. While not directed by Boyle, the film maintained the intensity and social commentary of the original, earning praise for its frenetic pace and nail-biting action sequences. “28 Weeks Later” at the box office was a formidable follow-up, grossing approximately $64 million worldwide.

With the announcement of the new trilogy, we eagerly anticipate the next chapter in the saga.

The involvement of powerhouse talents like Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes only adds to the excitement. While details about the plot of the first film remain under wraps, one thing is for certain: with Boyle back in the director’s chair and Garland penning the script, audiences can expect a riveting and thought-provoking journey into the heart of darkness, a journey that is sure to leave them wanting more. Garland recently wrote and directed Civil War.

As the 28 Years Later trilogy gears up for production, speculation runs rampant about what twists and turns lie ahead. Will the survivors continue to fight for their lives against the relentless tide of infection? Or will new threats emerge, challenging their very humanity? Only time will tell. One thing is sure: with Boyle and Garland at the helm, the franchise’s future looks brighter. Stay tuned for more updates as the countdown to the apocalypse begins anew.
