First look at the terrifying “28 Years Later.”

The rage virus is back to haunt audiences once more. Academy Award-winning director Danny Boyle reunites with Academy Award-nominated writer Alex Garland. Together, they bring 28 Years Later, the long-awaited sequel to 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later. Slated to hit theaters on June 20, 2025, this latest chapter revisits the world that revolutionized zombie horror in 2002. Watch the trailer below!
For many, 28 Days Later remains an unforgettable cinematic experience.
The groundbreaking film, starring Cillian Murphy, introduced the world to the ferocious “rage-infected” and set a new standard for post-apocalyptic horror. It was also the first R-rated film I ever snuck into as a teenager—a rebellious act that led to my deep love for the genre. To this day, I regard 28 Days Later as a masterpiece, not just for its relentless tension but also for its haunting portrayal of humanity under duress. The sequel, 28 Weeks Later, continued the story with a gripping exploration of survival and moral compromise.

Now, the third installment expands the universe in new and chilling directions.
Set nearly three decades after the virus first escaped a biological weapons lab, the story centers on a group of survivors isolated on a small island. Connected to the mainland by a single fortified causeway, they’ve managed to carve out a fragile existence amidst the infected. But when one member ventures into the mainland for a mission, they uncover horrifying secrets. Not only have the infected mutated, but the remaining survivors have, too, in ways that will test the boundaries of humanity itself.
The film has an impressive cast, including Jodie Comer (The Bikeriders), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kraven The Hunter), Jack O’Connell (Unbroken), newcomer Alfie Williams, and the legendary Ralph Fiennes (The Menu). With Cillian Murphy as an executive producer, it’s clear this project aims to honor the legacy of the original while forging a bold new path.
As anticipation builds for the film’s summer 2025 release, fans of the series and cinematic horror are eager to see how Boyle and Garland will reimagine the nightmare. If the first two films taught us anything, survival in this world comes at a cost. And in 28 Years Later, that cost may be higher than ever before.
