A Big Bold Beautiful Journey Review: Strangely Beautiful and Beautifully Strange

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is a whimsical romance with mid-90s spirit.

Taking words straight from the movie, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is “strangely beautiful and beautifully strange.” Directed by Kogonada (After Yang, Columbus), the film is a whimsical and heartfelt story that recalls the quirky mid-’90s romances filled with surreal touches and deep meaning.

The film follows Sarah (Margot Robbie) and David (Colin Farrell), two strangers who meet at a wedding and, through a mysterious twist, embark on a fantastical journey. They pass through magical doors that take them to defining moments of their pasts, allowing them to reflect on who they are and who they might become. What’s remarkable is how naturally the film introduces these elements. The magic is never explained, and it doesn’t need to be—I went along with what played out in front of me, and it was enchanting.

Robbie and Farrell’s Evolving Chemistry

At first, Robbie and Farrell’s chemistry feels uncertain, and I wasn’t convinced they would work as a pair. Yet, as the story unfolds, their performances start to come together. By the second act, the connection becomes believable, and their vulnerability makes the relationship both charming and heartfelt.

Strong Supporting Roles

Kevin Kline adds warmth to his small role, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge delivers a standout performance that injects wit and energy into the film. Her character steals nearly every scene she’s in, balancing the drama with sharp and mildly “vulgar” humor.

A Visual and Magical Experience

Beyond the performances, the film is visually stunning. The cinematography captures the whimsical world with elegance, and the choice to use a sound stage for one of the main locations was genius, enhancing the dreamlike atmosphere. These creative decisions make the movie feel immersive and transportive.

Where It Falters

Despite its many charms, the film drags in many places. The pacing stumbles, and some sequences border on cringeworthy or randomness. This uneven rhythm occasionally takes away from the otherwise magical journey.

Verdict

I give A Big Bold Beautiful Journey 3.5 out of 5 stars. With its whimsical world, heartfelt performances, and enchanting use of magical doors, this film is a romance drama that will connect with audiences willing to embrace its strangeness. It’s not without flaws, but its sincerity and charm shine through.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

In theaters everywhere September 19th.
