Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland Turns 15: A Look Back at the 2010 Fantasy

Behind the scenes of Alice in Wonderland’s stunning design and all-star cast.

Today marks the 15th anniversary of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, the visually stunning, surreal film that brought Lewis Carroll’s beloved tale to life with a darker, whimsical twist. Released in 2010, the two-time Oscar-winning film introduced audiences to a reimagined version of Wonderland, blending Burton’s signature gothic style with fantastical elements.

Starring Mia Wasikowska as Alice Kingsleigh, the film sees the young woman return to the fantastical world she first visited as a child. There, she must confront the tyrannical rule of the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter). As Alice embarks on a journey to defeat the Red Queen and restore order to Wonderland, she uncovers hidden strengths and faces challenges that will change her forever.

The cast also featured standout performances, with Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, whose eccentric personality became an instant fan favorite. Anne Hathaway portrayed the White Queen, Alice’s ally in her fight against the Red Queen. Interestingly, Hathaway was initially offered the role of Alice, but she chose to play the White Queen instead, a decision that ultimately proved to be a perfect fit for her talents. The film also starred Crispin Glover as the Knave of Hearts and featured voice work from Stephen Fry (Cheshire Cat), Alan Rickman (Blue Caterpillar), and Barbara Windsor (Dormouse).

The film’s unique blend of live-action and computer-generated imagery (CGI) helped it stand out in fantasy. Burton, known for his dark, quirky visual style, designed the Red and White Queen’s palaces to resemble Cinderella’s castle at Disney World, adding an iconic, whimsical touch to the film’s set design. The sprawling, dreamlike landscapes, colorful characters, and intricate costumes helped Burton’s Wonderland feel both strange and familiar, captivating audiences with its visual complexity.

From a financial perspective it was a resounding success.

The film grossed over $1 billion worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing films of 2010 and solidifying its place in cinematic history. It also won two Academy Awards for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design, a testament to the creative work behind the scenes. Despite being met with mixed reviews from critics, Alice in Wonderland has since become a beloved entry in Burton’s filmography and remains a fan favorite.

Its 15th anniversary offers the perfect opportunity to revisit this visually dazzling and imaginative interpretation of a timeless classic and celebrate the film’s lasting impact on fantasy cinema and pop culture.
