Tony Tost and Paul Walter Hauser discuss the ride that is Americana.

Americana, written and directed by Tony Tost, arrives in theaters on August 22, offering a sharp and unexpected blend of crime, comedy, and modern Western grit. Starring Sydney Sweeney, Paul Walter Hauser, Halsey, Simon Rex, Eric Dane, and Zahn McClarnon, the film follows a colorful set of characters all chasing the same prize — a rare Native American artifact that’s landed on the black market.
The story pairs a shy waitress with big dreams (Sweeney) and a lovelorn military veteran (Hauser) in a dangerous pursuit that puts them in the crosshairs of ruthless criminals, opportunistic collectors, and a desperate woman fleeing her past.
Casting the Perfect Lefty
When asked when Paul Walter Hauser first landed on his radar, Tost didn’t hesitate to call the actor the perfect choice for Lefty. “It’s inconceivable now to imagine any other living actor,” Tost said. “I knew Paul as a dramatic powerhouse first from Richard Jewell, and then I realized, oh, he’s also funny as hell. Once his name came up, everyone just said, ‘Let’s stop talking and send it to Paul.’”

Hauser said he was hooked from the moment he read the script, which was titled National Anthem at the time. “I think I was only 10 or 20 pages in when I texted my reps and said, ‘Hey, this is really good,’” Hauser said. “I even made my assistant read it to make sure I wasn’t crazy. He agreed — it’s a smart person movie. Smart person movies are dope. I don’t do a lot of those.”
Worried the role might go to a bigger name, Hauser told his team to move quickly. “I don’t care, just make the deal go through so they can’t take it back,” he said.
Chemistry in the Chaos
Asked about his on-screen dynamic with co-star Sydney Sweeney, Hauser credited both the writing and the natural connection between them. “It was just kind of an instantaneous thing,” Hauser said. “It’s in the writing, but as far as the chemistry, it’s just two good actors trying to connect. Being Lefty, he’s looking for his person — and Sidney’s a beautiful, sweet woman in real life, so it’s not that hard to act interested or like a dopey guy in her presence.”

Hoping for a Cinematic Reunion
When the idea of reuniting for future projects came up, both Tost and Hauser were quick to agree. “I would love nothing more than for Paul and me to be kind of like attached at the hip cinematically for a whole run of films,” Tost said. “Like those Robert Altman or Paul Thomas Anderson companies of actors — and have Paul right in the middle. He can do anything I can write in any tonality or modality.”
Hauser added, “As an actor, there’s no cooler invite than doing repeat business with someone you like and respect. I definitely hope I get to be in a Tony Tost movie again.”
With Americana, the pair has delivered something sharp, stylish, and unforgettable — the kind of film that feels both classic and fresh. Whether or not a full “Tost-Hauser Cinematic Universe” materializes, audiences will be eager to see them together again.
