Amy Adams Stars in Surreal Motherhood Tale Nightbitch – Movie Trailer

Motherhood takes a wild turn in Nightbitch, a new film by Marielle Heller.

Motherhood takes on a beastly transformation in Nightbitch, the upcoming darkly satirical film. It stars six-time Academy Award nominee Amy Adams. The film is based on Rachel Yoder’s best-selling novel, directed and written by Marielle Heller (A Beautiful Day in the NeighborhoodCan You Ever Forgive Me?). Known for its feminist take on the struggles of modern womanhood, Nightbitch arrives in select theaters this December.

Adams stars as a former career-driven woman who steps away from the corporate world to become a stay-at-home mom. However, the transition from office life to full-time motherhood soon takes a surreal turn as she begins to suspect that she is transforming into a dog—literally and figuratively. The psychological transformation pushes the boundaries of how motherhood can feel like an all-consuming, otherworldly experience.

Joining Adams in the cast are Scoot McNairy (A Complete Unknown, C’Mon, C’Mon), Zoë Chao (Your Place or Mine), Mary Holland (Senior Year), and newcomers Arleigh Patrick Snowden and Emmett James Snowden. The ensemble also includes Archana Rajan and veteran actress Jessica Harper (Suspiria).

Filmmaker Marielle Heller, known for her strong voice in depicting emotionally nuanced characters, brings her singular vision to Nightbitch. Heller, who adapted the novel during her journey into motherhood, found the story personally resonant. “I read the book early in the pandemic, right after I had my second baby,” Heller said. “It was cathartic for me. This felt like an honest reflection of my life.”

The story of was inspired by Rachel Yoder’s experiences of becoming a mother.

“I found myself as a stay-at-home mom, something I never thought I’d be, and I lost myself in that,” Yoder said. “The character and story were born from that silence and frustration.” Producer Sue Naegle, Stacy O’Neil, and Adams were passionate about adapting the novel for the screen. “Even if you’re not a mother, the story touches on that feeling of being pulled in multiple directions and losing a part of yourself in the process,” Naegle said. Adams, who also serves as a producer, connected deeply with Heller’s vision for the film. “She created a very identifiable world for me,” Adams said. “I immediately felt such a kinship and understanding of the character.”

Nightbitch will be released in select theaters this December.
