From the Big Screen to TV: Are We There Yet? at 20.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of Are We There Yet? a family comedy that hit theaters on January 21, 2005. The film, directed by Brian Levant, showcases a hilarious and heartwarming road trip adventure featuring rapper-turned-actor Ice Cube in his first PG-rated movie role.
Ice Cube stars as Nick Persons. He is a selfish bachelor. His life takes a chaotic turn when he volunteers to drive the two children of a woman he’s romantically pursuing. He travels from Portland, Oregon, to Vancouver, British Columbia with them. The kids, Lindsey (Aleisha Allen) and Kevin (Philip Daniel Bolden) are determined to sabotage the trip to keep their mother, Suzanne (Nia Long), from getting close to Nick.

What follows is a series of comedic mishaps involving everything from a runaway car to a misadventure with a wild deer. Along the way, Nick learns valuable lessons about family, patience, and love.

Are We There Yet? brought a fresh perspective to family comedies thanks to Ice Cube’s charismatic performance and comedic timing. Directed by Levant, known for helming family-friendly hits such as Beethoven and The Flintstones, the movie resonated with audiences for its mix of slapstick humor and heartfelt moments.
Upon its release, the film was a box office success.
It would gross $98 million worldwide against a modest $32 million budget. Its popularity led to a 2007 sequel, Are We Done Yet? which follows Nick and Suzanne as they navigate the challenges of blending their families and renovating a new home.
The success of the films also inspired a television adaptation, Are We There Yet? which ran from 2010 to 2013, further solidifying the franchise’s place in pop culture.
The film’s anniversary serves as a reminder of its enduring charm and appeal. Ice Cube’s portrayal of Nick Persons marked a significant departure from his previous roles in grittier, R-rated films like Boyz n the Hood and Friday, showcasing his versatility as an actor capable of leading a family-friendly comedy.
Two decades later, Are We There Yet? continues to be celebrated for its humor, heart, and the universal theme of the lengths one will go to for love. Whether revisiting the film for nostalgia or discovering it for the first time, audiences can still enjoy the laugh-out-loud antics and touching moments that have made this movie a beloved classic.
