The cultural phenomenon of “Attack on Titan” is stepping onto the New York stage.

The critically acclaimed manga “Attack on Titan” by Hajime Isayama is set to debut in New York City in an innovative 2.5D musical format. The musical will be performed at the New York City Center (131 W. 55th Street) from October 11-13, 2024. This New York engagement marks the production’s first international performance. The musical will be performed in Japanese with English subtitles. The cast includes Kurumu Okamiya as Eren Yeager, Sara Takatsuki as Mikasa Ackerman, Eito Konishi as Armin Arlert, Ryo Matsuda as Levi, and Takuro Ohno as Erwin Smith. The ensemble of 35 performers promises to deliver an electrifying performance.
The musical represents a groundbreaking approach to storytelling on stage.
Directed by Go Ueki, this production pushes the boundaries of conventional theater. It combines advanced visual effects and choreography to create a truly immersive experience. The creative team has meticulously crafted a production that honors the source material while offering something entirely new. Combining traditional musical elements with state-of-the-art technology will captivate both long-time fans and newcomers alike.

Set in a dystopian world where humanity faces extinction at the hands of grotesque giants known as Titans, “Attack on Titan” follows the story of Eren Yeager. A century ago, the last remnants of humanity sought refuge behind colossal walls. However, Eren’s desire to explore the world beyond turns into a nightmare when the Titans breach the walls. This reignites the battle for survival. With 34 volumes, the series has been adapted into anime, video games, and novels, selling over 140 million copies worldwide.
2.5D Musicals: A Japanese Innovation
The concept of 2.5D musicals originated in Japan around 2000. It merges the 2D world of manga and animation with the 3D world of live theater. This genre has brought other popular titles to life on stage, such as “Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon: The Super Live,” which debuted in the US in 2019. Hajime Isayama, the creator of “Attack on Titan,” expressed his excitement for the New York City debut. “When I saw the production in Tokyo, I was floored by its power. The musical perfectly expresses the story of ‘Attack on Titan.’ The action and songs create a different experience from the manga or anime. I can’t wait for everyone to see it in New York.”

“Attack on Titan: The Musical” will be a must-see event for fans of the series and musical theater enthusiasts alike. Combining the emotional depth of the original manga with the spectacle of a live performance promises to be a groundbreaking theatrical experience. Tickets will be available soon for this limited engagement. Don’t miss the opportunity to witness the epic story of “Attack on Titan” in a way you’ve never seen before.
