The Ballad of Wallis Island Shines with Humor, Heart, and a Standout Soundtrack – Review

Why The Ballad of Wallis Island is the most charming film of the year.

The Ballad of Wallis Island is a film that sneaked up on me. I was skeptical after seeing it all over social media and hearing endless praise. Could it really be that good? Within seconds, the film had me chuckling nonstop, and by the end, I was completely won over. This heartfelt dramedy is an absolute delight, packed with humor, stunning visuals, and a soundtrack that demands recognition.

Directed by James Griffiths and written by Tom Basden and Tim Key, The Ballad of Wallis Island tells the quirky tale of Charles (Key), a reclusive lottery winner who has turned his isolated island home into his own personal paradise. His grand dream? To reunite his favorite folk-rock duo, McGwyer Mortimer (Basden and Carey Mulligan), for an intimate, one-of-a-kind concert. The problem? The two former bandmates and ex-lovers are far from being on good terms. As Charles tries to hold things together, old wounds resurface, making for a night filled with unexpected revelations, tension, and brilliant comedy.

What really makes this film great is how it mixes heart and humor.

The comedy comes from awkward moments and deadpan delivery, with Key doing a fantastic job as the straight man. The back-and-forth banter between him and Basden is particularly awesome, giving a lot of the film its charm. Charles is both silly and super endearing, making it impossible not to cheer for him, even when his plans go hilariously wrong.

Aside from the laughs, The Ballad of Wallis Island is visually lovely. The cinematography makes the island feel like its own character, with stunning shots highlighting Wallis Island’s breathtaking beauty and charming vibe. It seems like the perfect spot to visit—picturesque, remote, and a little magical.

The music in the film is definitely one of its standout features. Basden and Mulligan’s folk-rock songs are super catchy and really connect with the film’s emotional moments. This soundtrack sticks with you long after the movie ends and deserves some award recognition.

Verdict

I give The Ballad of Wallis Island 4.5 out of 5 stars. With so many memorable scenes and a narrative that feels uniquely British yet universally appealing, it proves that sometimes the hype is real. What started as a simple short film has blossomed into a full-length feature that delivers in every way. It’s charming, clever, and completely captivating—a film that sticks with you for all the right reasons.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
