Courtney Taylor Talks Ballard, Cold Cases, and Expanding the Bosch Universe – INTERVIEW

Inside Ballard: Courtney Taylor on new mysteries and working with Maggie Q.

Prime Video’s Ballard continues the legacy of Michael Connelly’s bestselling novels, following Detective Renée Ballard (Maggie Q) as she takes charge of the LAPD’s new, underfunded cold case division. Alongside retired detective Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver), Ballard’s team digs into the city’s most haunting unsolved cases — uncovering serial killers, murder cover-ups, and a conspiracy that could shatter the LAPD from within.

Ahead of the show’s premiere on July 9, I spoke with Ballard star Courtney Taylor, who shared what it’s like stepping into Connelly’s crime universe, how she blended levity into the drama, and what it was like working alongside a powerhouse cast.

Joining Michael Connelly’s World

“I‘m so honored to be a part of the Michael Connelly universe in any capacity,” Taylor told Nerdtropolis. “I love Lincoln Lawyer, I love Bosch. I watched Bosch for a little while, and then I kind of jumped off. But as soon as I got the audition, I dove right back in. The storytelling, the excitement, the thrill — it’s done so well because it’s based off these insanely wonderful books.”

Taylor says being part of Ballard feels like a chance to help carry forward a legacy that’s beloved by long-time Bosch fans. “Just being a part of the Ballard side of things — I cannot wait to continue this legacy,” she said.

New Entry Point or Bosch Nostalgia?

Fans might wonder: Does Ballard stand alone, or do you need to be a Bosch superfan to dive in? According to Taylor, the show strikes a balance between both.

“I’m not going to lie — I think it’s the best of both,” she said. “There’s layered moments where it feels nostalgic to Bosch, but we’ve also done something so exciting to bring in new people to the fandom. That’s the best thing about Michael Connelly’s series: the ability to be in the same universe but hop into a new perspective.”

An Ensemble Worth the Buzz

Taylor couldn’t help but rave about the cast, especially co-star Maggie Q. “I’m on cloud nine. When I saw Maggie Q was involved, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh!’ When I did my chemistry read, I had to calm myself down. But she showed me exactly what it means to set the tone on set. She made sure everyone was good. Watching her work these intense scenes while also caring for the cast — it was amazing.”

Taylor says working alongside acting heavyweights like John Carroll Lynch was a career highlight, too. “He just has such a body of work. All of us meshing together to create this beautiful ensemble — I couldn’t ask for anything better.”

Bringing Levity to Dark Mysteries

As Ballard explores conspiracies, serial murders and long-buried secrets, Taylor said she made sure to add her own spin. “I tried to bring a little bit of myself into it because in a drama series you need small moments of levity,” she explained. “Because I come from the comedy world, I think I did a pretty good job providing that little bit of light you need in a heavy series.”

What Fans Should Watch For

Without spoiling too much, Taylor teased an episode she’s excited for fans to see. “It centers around Maggie’s character but really shows how we’ve all connected and grown. Once you fall in love with these characters, the drama will have you begging for more,” she said.

With a conspiracy that could shake the LAPD and characters you can root for, Ballard looks ready to hook both new viewers and long-time Bosch diehards.

Ballard begins streaming on July 9 on Prime Video.
