Jermaine Fowler leads a new generation at Calvin’s iconic Chicago barbershop in Prime Video’s upcoming eight-episode comedy series.

Prime Video is reopening the doors to one of the most famous barbershops in movie history.
The first teaser trailer for Barbershop, a new comedy series inspired by the beloved film franchise, was unveiled during CultureCon with stars Jermaine Fowler and Brett Gray.
The series introduces a new generation of barbers, customers, and personalities while returning to the Chicago shop that has served as the heart of the franchise for more than two decades.
All eight episodes will debut exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
Jermaine Fowler Takes Over Calvin’s Barbershop
The new series follows Travis “Trav” Walker, played by Fowler, as he returns to Chicago with hopes of honoring his grandfather’s legacy at the iconic Calvin’s barbershop.

However, the shop Trav remembers is not exactly the place he finds when he comes home.
Chicago has changed, the barbershop has changed, and a new group of barbers and customers now occupy the chairs. Trav must figure out where he belongs while attempting to preserve what made the shop important to the neighborhood in the first place.
Calvin’s continues to serve as much more than a place to get a haircut. It remains a gathering spot where sharp fades are accompanied by even sharper opinions, debates, and conversations about whatever is happening in the community.
That combination of workplace comedy and social commentary has been part of the franchise since the beginning.
Barbershop Brings Together a Large Comedy Ensemble
Fowler leads the new cast alongside Brett Gray, Punkie Johnson, Roy Wood Jr., E.J. Bonilla, Bresha Webb, Bokeem Woodbine, Tiana Okoye and Langston Kerman.

The series will also feature an extensive lineup of guest stars, including Zack Fox, Ego Nwodim, Diallo Riddle, Ziwe, Tituss Burgess, Comedian CP, Devon Walker and Belmont Cameli.
With comedians including Johnson, Wood Jr., Kerman, Fox, Nwodim and Walker appearing throughout the series, Prime Video appears ready to lean heavily into the lively conversations and arguments that have always defined the property.
The Original Barbershop Became a Comedy Favorite
The franchise began with Barbershop in 2002.

Ice Cube starred as Calvin Palmer Jr., who inherits his father’s barbershop on Chicago’s South Side but initially struggles to understand why the business means so much to the neighborhood.
The ensemble included Cedric the Entertainer as Eddie, along with Anthony Anderson, Eve, Michael Ealy, Sean Patrick Thomas, Troy Garity, and Leonard Earl Howze.
Rather than simply using the shop as the setting for a traditional workplace comedy, Barbershop turned its chairs into a stage for conversations about relationships, politics, culture, neighborhood issues, and everyday life.
Calvin eventually realizes that the shop’s true value is not simply financial. It represents his father’s legacy and serves as a place where the surrounding community can gather.
That idea appears to remain central to Prime Video’s new series.
Barbershop 2 Expanded Calvin’s, Chicago Story
The success of the first movie led to Barbershop 2: Back in Business in 2004.

Ice Cube returned as Calvin alongside much of the original ensemble as the shop faced a very different threat: a slick new competitor opening nearby as development and gentrification began changing the neighborhood.
The sequel also introduced Queen Latifah as hairstylist Gina Norris.
Her appearance would become particularly important to the future of the franchise because Gina soon received a movie of her own.
Queen Latifah Led the Beauty Shop Spinoff
Queen Latifah returned as Gina in Beauty Shop, which expanded the Barbershop universe beyond Chicago.

The 2005 spinoff followed Gina after relocating to Atlanta and eventually leaving her difficult employer to open a salon of her own. The movie featured Alicia Silverstone, Alfre Woodard, Andie MacDowell, Mena Suvari, Djimon Hounsou, and Kevin Bacon alongside Latifah.
Like Barbershop, the movie used the salon as a gathering place for comedy, conversations, and relationships while shifting the focus toward Gina and the women working alongside her.
Barbershop Previously Made the Jump to Television
The upcoming Prime Video project will not be the franchise’s first attempt at television.

Barbershop: The Series debuted on Showtime in 2005 and ran for one season consisting of 10 episodes.
Omar Gooding stepped into the role of Calvin Palmer Jr., taking over the character previously played by Ice Cube. Developed for television by John Ridley, the series continued exploring life inside the South Side Chicago shop.
Prime Video’s version takes a different approach by moving the story forward with Trav rather than simply recasting Calvin for another adaptation of the original setup.
Barbershop: The Next Cut Reunited the Original Crew
More than a decade after Barbershop 2, Ice Cube returned as Calvin for Barbershop: The Next Cut in 2016.

Cedric the Entertainer, Eve, Anthony Anderson and Sean Patrick Thomas were among the familiar faces who returned, while Regina Hall, Common, Lamorne Morris, Deon Cole, J.B. Smoove and Nicki Minaj were part of the expanded ensemble.
The third main film found Calvin’s shop operating alongside a beauty salon while the characters confronted growing violence in their neighborhood and attempted to use the business as a place for positive change.
The movie reinforced an idea that has remained consistent across the franchise: Calvin’s is never just a business.
It is a community.
Prime Video Gives Barbershop a New Generation
The new Barbershop series arrives more than 24 years after audiences were first introduced to Calvin and his crew.

Instead of attempting to recreate the original ensemble, the Prime Video series has an opportunity to explore how the shop and Chicago surrounding it have evolved across generations.
Trav returning because of his grandfather’s legacy also echoes Calvin’s journey in the original movie, where understanding the importance of family, community, and the barbershop itself became central to his story.
The difference is that Trav is walking into a business that already carries decades of history.
With a new cast, established comedy talent and one of the franchise’s most recognizable locations returning, Barbershop is preparing to put another generation in the chair.
Barbershop premieres all eight episodes on February 10, 2027, exclusively on Prime Video.
