Guilty Pleasures: Baywatch and Family Matters Turn 35

Looking Back at Baywatch and Family Matters on their 35th anniversary.

Two iconic television shows, Baywatch and Family Matters, both celebrate their 35th anniversaries on September 22, marking their debut in 1989. While completely different in tone and genre, both series became beloved household names and stand as guilty pleasures that left a lasting impact on pop culture.

Baywatch, set against the sunny backdrop of California’s beaches, followed the lives of lifeguards as they navigated thrilling rescues, personal dramas, and romantic entanglements. Created by Michael Berk, Douglas Schwartz, and Gregory J. Bonann, the show originally struggled in its first season on NBC but found its footing in syndication, eventually becoming a global phenomenon. Its star, David Hasselhoff, became a cultural icon, and actresses like Pamela Anderson and Yasmine Bleeth gained fame for their roles. Known for its slow-motion running sequences and beach rescue scenes, Baywatch dominated the ’90s, becoming one of the most-watched television shows worldwide, reaching over 140 countries at its peak.

Meanwhile, Family Matters provided viewers with a more wholesome, comedic experience. A spin-off of Perfect Strangers, the series followed the Winslow family in Chicago, with patriarch Carl Winslow (played by Reginald VelJohnson) at the center. What started as a family sitcom took an unexpected turn when the nerdy, suspender-wearing neighbor Steve Urkel (Jaleel White) entered the scene. Originally intended as a minor character, Urkel’s quirky catchphrases like “Did I do that?” turned him into the show’s breakout star, and the character eventually became synonymous with the show’s success. Family Matters ran for nine seasons and tackled issues like family values, peer pressure, and relationships while maintaining a comedic tone.

Both shows contributed uniquely to the pop culture landscape.

Baywatch became emblematic of the glamorous and action-packed side of late ‘80s and ‘90s television, while Family Matters focused on heartwarming, relatable family dynamics. The shows’ massive appeal was reflected in everything from merchandising to parodies and homages, cementing their place in TV history.

Though different in style, Baywatch and Family Matters connected with audiences on a deep level, whether through thrilling beach rescues or the comedic misadventures of a clumsy neighbor. Their longevity and the nostalgia they invoke today demonstrate their undeniable influence on American television.
