Ben Barnes and Joe Freeman Talk The Institute and Earning Stephen King’s Approval – INTERVIEW

Ben Barnes and Joe Freeman bring The Institute to life with Stephen King’s blessing.

From the mind of Stephen King and executive producer Jack Bender (FROM), The Institute has arrived on MGM+. It is another chilling tale from King’s imagination. Teen genius Luke Ellis, played by Joe Freeman, is kidnapped and wakes up in a hidden facility where children with unusual abilities are held captive.

Meanwhile, in a nearby town, haunted ex-cop Tim Jamieson, portrayed by Ben Barnes — known for his roles in Shadow and Bone, The Punisher, and The Chronicles of Narnia — is searching for peace. However, in true King fashion, their paths are destined to intertwine in unexpected ways.

Rising Star Joe Freeman Gets Praise from Ben Barnes

When I caught up with Barnes and Freeman, it was clear how much they respected each other — and the material. Barnes, known for Shadow and Bone and The Punisher, didn’t hold back his admiration for his young co-star.

He called Freeman “one of my favorite new actors.” Barned shared that he knew Joe would shine from the very beginning. “We did a read-through of the first two episodes with Mary-Louise Parker,” Barnes said. “About five minutes in, Joe looked up at me like, ‘I don’t really know what we’re supposed to do.’ But then he read his first long scene and just took off like a rocket.”

Real-Life Friendship Built an Invisible Thread

Freeman laughed about how their off-camera bond made the job harder at first. The two spent so much downtime together. From reading lines or catching movies, they seemed too familiar on screen for characters who were supposed to feel like strangers.

“Jack Bender had to remind us that we were too friendly with each other,” Freeman explained. Barnes agreed, saying that distance worked perfectly for the eerie, slow-burn feel King is so good at. “It actually builds this really interesting tension,” Barnes said. “King is a master of simmering suspense. Having these two characters in almost different stories that slowly overlap just pulls you in deeper.”

Getting Stephen King’s Seal of Approval

With King serving as executive producer, the cast felt a huge responsibility to get it right. Barnes admitted he’d love nothing more than to know King approves of what they’ve done with Tim and Luke’s story. “I know he’s watched the show and came on as a producer after, so we got his stamp of approval, which felt really good,” Barnes said. “It’s silly, but you want the author to be proud. The Tim in the show is a bit more physical and stoic than in the book, so I’d love to ask him if he’s happy with those differences.”

A Must-Watch for King Fans

With a cast this passionate and King’s signature slow-burn storytelling, The Institute promises to hook viewers who crave eerie tension and layered characters. Watching Barnes and Freeman talk, it’s clear their chemistry — on and off screen — is a big part of why this works.

If you’re ready for another dark, character-driven ride into Stephen King’s twisted world, the first two episodes of The Institute are now streaming on MGM+. And judging by the bond these two share, here’s hoping they’ll team up again soon — and make King proud all over again.
